Intercooler

I wasn't sure if there is an upgrade intercooler for a TII with the TMIC. If there is what is a reliable brand that will add HP and about how much would it cost. Possibly some links to some sites.

Shane at www.Rotaryworks.com pointed out to me that the older S4 IC's had a thinner core than the J-specs & later S5's.

Your '90 probably has the thicker core.

A couple of tweaks are possible:
Adhesive insulation on the bottom of the IC heat shield.
After doing the TB mod & removing the dash pot, the heat shield can be flattened to allow more exit air path.

you could have one made, and or buy the mazdaspeed inlet for the hood scoop. It's a little bigger. Not much out there for it.

there is one by arc that is supposed to support up to 300rwhp. These can be found on ebay for about 250 to 300 bucks, I'll see if I can find a link. Here you go http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33742

ps. of course if your going to go that route you could get this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33742 and just make that one piece they said is missing or get this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33742 witch looks like it has almost all or all of the piping. I just got the old school trust fmic and besides the lack of information out there on it, it looks good so far. If you do a search on this site there is a large post about these old school intercoolers especially the last one I listed and we think we have all the piping down where it should go, I will later affirm this when I get my turbo back from the machine shop.

There's no point spending money upgrading the TMIC. It's cooling ability is still limited by how much air the hood scoop provides and it will still suffer terriblt from heat soak. The money is better spend on a FMIC.

That's incorrect. J-spec and US-spec S4 intercoolers are exactly the same (other than some hose connections). S5's are dimensionally identical but have larger tubes in the core and a slightly bigger inlet pipe.

A FMIC installation will only cause extra lag if it's poorly designed and built.

If you really want proof of the FMIC's superiority, look at modern turbo cars. Find me one that doesn't have a FMIC...

Ahh - I see - slightly more flow, but no better heat dissipation..

Oops, how'd I forget about the WRX... Still, it's the only one worth mentioning, and it should be noted that there are literally dozens of FMIC kits to choose from for the WRX.

911 Turbo.

Bam!

I'm not arguing against the effectiveness of front mount's though.

Too bad the car is 10 yrs old already...I think he meant new cars. Turbo cars of yesteryear basically never (cept the starion) came with a FMIC. Now, many more of them do. I'm sure it has to do with 2 things:

-Need for more efficient cooling as modern cars run more boost
-Trends

Yes, and Mitsubishi Starion. (Well they are twins...). (After 1983 & 84 models they started putting intercoolers on the cars I beleive.) All being front mount. Pretty big ones too.. Alot of guys will use them as they were nice and big. Ive got one in my garage, but im trying to figure out how to make the piping.

So if your out in the yards looking for Starions/Conquest. Don't bother with the 83 at least, I have one and they never came stock with the intercooler. But the later years did, I got screwed I guess.
