How would you rate this Mechanic?
I had a new clutch and drive shaft installed yesterday.
I bought Mazdatrix upgrade clutch and found a Mechanic close
by that I've used in the past to install it for 327.00 which
he said includes resurfacing the flywheel.
So I pick up the car and he say's it will be a little stiff at first
but it will work-out as I drive it. I drove home about 2 mile
and it work-in, instead of out. By the time I got home I
couldn't get it into any gear. So I turned the car off and
mannaged to work it into 2nd gear, and drove back to the shop. I told him something needs adjusted, I didn't have this problem before. He said, the parts I gave him are bad, that there is no adjustment on a hydrolic clutch.
I said I know I read in the FSM that there was some sort of
adjustment. Then his helper goes and pulls up the FSM on
thier computer and say's, "hey ye, there is". So I had to go
back to work and left it with them. He drives up about
30 min later all smiles wanting me to drive it. He also said
I adjusted your Idle for you. "O' ****", I've spent hours on
this car perfecting my Idle and had it 98% perfect. The clutch works great, but now when I turn on the AC my
Idle sky rockets to 2100 rpm. This is a new Idle problem
from his "adjustment". I'm hoping he can undo this adjustment after I get off work today.

PS : forgot to mention, he addmitted to not resurfacing the flywheel. He said he didn't have a wrench big enough
for the big nut on it. Well, at least he is honest.

wow he would get a negative number in my books i hope you didn't pay that price just for him to install a clutch on your car! cause seriously there is no way that i would pay for that kind of service not to mention if you didn't ask him to fix the iddle he shouldn't have touched it!!
IMHO don't go back to that idiot! I mean a clutch is a simple install!

Delete his number from speed dial!
He has made a number of basic mistakes, and these are the one that he told you about, what about the one he did not
As for the flywheel, how can you trust his judgement about it being in 'good shape', is this compared to his expense of buying a new socket to remove the flywheel nut?
You mentioned that you have the FSM, either is is time to dig a little deeper and tackle more yourself or find a respected rotary mechanic

Seems honest enough. If disc wasn't worn down to rivets, chances are the flywheel didn't need to be resurfaced, only roughed up, so a small refund should be forthcoming. No need to do flywheel if not necessary. He should have at least drove it to make sure everything in order for the customer, which he didn't. Can't wait until he shows you what he adjusted for the idle.
Did you ever find out what they were grinding???

I would love to do my own work but, don't have the time.
I work 50 + hours a week and wanted a one day clutch
job. I also didn't have a place to leave it jacked up if needed.

No, but the only theory we could come up with is maybe
the tool they were trying to remove the pilot bearing with. Wich brings up the refund for the flywheel, he said
the extra labor of removing the pilot bearing sucked up the differnce.
His last words were, "Send me some business"!

I took my own parts because I didn't want to pay 299.00
for a 175.00 clutch kit. I'd rather by good parts and pay extra
for the insttall. This does cuase conflict if something goes wrong, they blame you for bringing your own parts.
But I paid for the upgrade from Mazdatrix total of 379.00.
This was Cover, Pressure Plate, Release bearing, pilot
& a couple little items.

First off I would like to say I am sorry that you have to go through this.
Ok with that being said he is a mechanic that you should never go back to again. When I charge someone for a service or part I do it/install it or I refund him or her back there cash. Did he refund your money for the re-surfacing flywheel charge?
On the matter of the re-surfacing the flywheel even if the clutch disc was not down to the rivets does not mean the flywheel-mating surface was good. Even with a good clutch disc there can be un-even wear on the flywheel-mating surface. When replacing a new clutch and pressure plate it is standard operation procedure to re-surface the flywheel. It’s easy and cheap I do not know why he just did not do it.
On the matter of adjusting the clutch, yes this CAN be adjusted. I under stand that not all mechanics now all cars but they should know the basics. And basically you don’t engineer a clutch system with out the ability to adjust it (common since). PM me if you would like to learn how to adjust this on your own.
And on the matter of him “adjusting” your idle with out you asking, he should have called you and asked before he did any such thing.

You should sell your car. I'm sorry, and some people may disagree but you HAVE to be able to work on your 7 ...... period. Everybody else is GOING to **** it up. There is no such thing as not having enough time. You make the time, If you love your rx7.
