How much oil do you use for a fresh oil change?

I did a oil change today and added 4 quarts. The stick said it was full. I left the 7 sit for about 5 hours and then went to drive it. When I accelerated, the buzzer went off. i did top the coolant today too. I checked the oil and the stick was bone dry. There was no oil on the ground though. I then put another quart n a half in it and the stick reads full. What's wrong?

5 quarts. I think technically it is 4.7 or something like that but just put 5 quarts in when you do an oil change.

That's what I did. It showed full on the stick. But it must have settled or the cars angle was off and made it look full. I added the full 5 after the buzzer and it reads full now. I'll check it tomorrow and see if it still reads full.

it should be fine. oil leaks are usually pretty easy to spot. if you had the front of the car jacked up that could be why. i usually check my oil level when i put gas in the tank to be safe. i'm kind of paranoid about stuff like that though.

Total Dry: 6.1 qt.
Oil pan: 4.7 qt.
Oil Cooler: 0.85 qt.
Oil Filter: 0.32 qt.

But you'll never get the oil out of the cooler, which can hold nearly a quart. Hence to reason they say to add 5 quarts. I always end up with the level a little above full when I do it.

Here's how you should really do it.

Drain oil

Drain oil cooler (its kind of a pain in the ***, but you get more crap out)

Take off filter.

Prime new filter (fill it with oil. Put in on super quick so it doesn't spill out when you put it on)

Fill oil until it says its full. You'll never get the x amount of oil that it says in the FSM. Just fill it till its at the top of the dip stick. Buy one of those gallon jugs of oil too. Or larger if you can keep it in storage somewhere.

Start the engine + run it for about 30 seconds. If you have flooding problems the run it around the block.

Check level again + fill it till you're satisfied.

Don't forget new crush washers! + don't over torque things too. Just tight enough to feel the crush washer crush.

Everyone has the misconception that you will take x amount of oil exactly. LIES!!!!!!!!
I used to work at jiffy lube + now I'm a motorcycle mechanic. I change A TON of oil. It's never x amount exactly. Just fill it until it's full.

Not really worth the trouble IMO.

Definitely not worth the trouble, nor the mess, lol.

Wow, somebody who does it right! That is pretty rare.

For those who don't want to deal with crush washers, I highly recommend the Fumoto oil drain valve (F-106 Regular Valve). Besides eliminating the crush washer, you don't need to worry about stripping or cleaning the drain plug, and you can drain just a bit of oil if accidentally over-filled or for an oil sample. I have also found that I can drain the oil in my RX-7s without jacking up the car if I use a low-profile oil pan on level ground.

True, but mine has always been 5.0 to 5.5qts over the last 20 years and 4 cars.

What I do is drain the oil, replace the filter while waiting, fill oil, run for 10 seconds or so to fill up the filter, cut the engine, check oil again, top up, and your done.

I wouldn't fill up the filter and quickly put it on... That's the proper way to do it, but not when the oil spills all over your engine trying to put it on.

Waldog: I can bet you jacked up the front of the car super high to get underneath? You didn't jack up the rear to make it level correct? There's your answer. I always fill on a hoist.

Thanks. Btw: I always buy the jug of oil. I keep some in my trunk at all times just in-case.

Sure did. Slid under it, undid plug. Haha. I don't have a garage and live in a complex atm. I used my friends ally driveway cause his car is getting finished in his garage..

I now know the proper methods. Thanks a lot to all the replies.

265 posts and you don't know what the FSM is?

Turns out that you learned more than you asked for, heh? You were just asking the wrong question. Then you asked the right question. Sorry if you didn't like the delivery.

People on the forum have no obligation to help you or tell you anything. They do it because they want to help, so don't be so rude.

FAQ's and Sticky is there as a reference. Now that you know about it, use it.

Give a bitch an answer, he's grateful for a day. Tomorrow he demands more.

Teach a man to use the FSM and now he has full access to knowledge forever.

You have almost 2k posts and couldn't answer a simple question? See how that works? The boat sails both ways.

As I stated, I tried the faqs and didn't see what I was looking for. I know how to use a forum. As for not knowing what the FSM was, sorry. I don't do abbreviations well. I also wasn't being rude. I got my answer though. And I know the people here don't have to help. But then again, people here also need not reply if they have no help to offer. Most people on the net know about faqs and google, as I tried both prior.

BTW: If any of this comes off as rude to you, then you are obviously looking for a rude reply. My tone is mellow.

Did you want me to do your search and post the link for oil change capacity?

You asked, I answered with the information you needed. It doesnt' turn my crank to tell you '5 Quarts' so I won't. I will tell you where to go for basic simple questions so you can ask important questions that require expertise. Now you know that forever.

You're better than you were. You are quite welcome.

You keep thinking that I posted a useless answer. I posted the most useful answer you could have received. It just required further action from you. You wanted easy, I gave you comprehensive.

A simple FAQ search for the acronym would have found the FSM.

The FSM link is the 6th post in the FAQ.

You don't sound rude-you sound defensive and maybe a little embarrassed. Car forums and this one in particular are pretty tough places to hang if you are 'new' to the scene. I cut my teeth on taking flak from the 'Old Timers' sitting on a stool across the counter at a combo speed shop/Napa store/machine shop. Before the net. I was the one asking the dumb questions, so I can relate.

Since you didn't like my original answer, let me give you one you might like better?
Q.)How much oil do you use for a fresh oil change?

A.) The same amount you use for a dirty oil change.

Have a nice day! REally.

You missed one thing. i didn't come here asking wtf FSM meant. Did I? Nope. You can be a dick if you want. The only thing it does for you is - makes you look like a dick.

Thanks to the people who replied and answered my original question. "How much oil do YOU use for a fresh oil change".

Not - how much oil is the recommended amount for a oil change. Damn son. You learn something new everyday. Maybe I just taught you how to read and fully understand a topic.

You got what you needed in spite of your complaint toward me. And my help to you is the help that keeps on helping. You just don't like it. I understand you are embarrassed at not knowing how to change your oil, setting off warning buzzers, fear of ruining your engine and needing bailed out with a quick fix. I'm just not a quick fix kind of guy.

You are quite a mellow dude just as claimed, that's for sure. You should try to chill just a little more.

And you should thank me.

I never edited the topic header. And I won't thank you. As you never answered my question. I'm also not embarrassed for any reason. I know how to change oil. I just wanted to know how much oil others used. Like I said, I used 4 quarts last time. This time I did the same, but the result seemed different.

I also didn't need bailed out. I can figure stuff out. I just wanted to know how much oil others used and if i did something wrong. No big deal. I know there's a bunch of ********* and **** all over the net with 1k + posts. I didn't think they were on the 7 forums though. Good day Chauncey.

Hey Chauncey, nice to meet you, I am Jack. I post here sometimes. I drive an RX7. This forum is called by various names- All the other RX7 forums and the RX7-V8 forums refer to this one as the 'Evil Forum'. I have been pretty gentle, polite and helpful. You have been, well you describe it as mellow. I wouldn't, but I am now trying to be extra polite since you seem to be relatively thin skinned.

The other answers all agreed with the FSM. Some of them got it from the FSM, some from the owners manual, some through trial and error, some by experience.

You used 4 qts the previous time and 4 qts this last time. You got exactly the same result-you just don't think you did. Most people don't keep making the same error because that would be embarrassing.

Good Luck with the car! And read that FSM it is your friend!
