How much does the shortblock weigh?

We're talking only the block here, no tranny, no manifolds, no water pump housing, just the core. Could a person carry it by themselves? could two people do it no problem?

thx

I can lift the entire engine myself. assembled......the block alone is not very heavy. coming out of the car took me and a buddy due to the awkwardness of the lift. And we put it back in the car by hand as well. But to answer your question I estimate 200plus.

I think its roughly 150, Plates are about 30, housings about 15, rotors 15, I picked up my shortblock and i'm not the biggest guy around, wasn't too heavy I walked it from the back of the car to my backyard.

with 2 people there isn't a problem lifting it. I'd guess the weight 180-200ish.

I don't know man me and another guy carried it and maybe because it was raining and we didn't have a good grip but that thing seemed like it weighed a ton! and I'm no small guy either.

Take the flywheel off if you're going to move it by yourself. It's close to 30lbs.

Ugh, I just got done dragging one out of the back of my GXL that me and my brother-in-law put in there for me to take it home. I get home and have to get it out myself. No easy task I tell ya. That bitch is heavy and awkward, I'd say . I still can't get my damn flywheel nut off either to make carrying it to where I plan to dismantle it any easier. Anyone got some good crazy ideaas on how to take it off? I have a breaker bar, 8 foot pipe, and trying to keep the flywheel in place with a half inch bar (that is all bent to hell). Still no pop, all my searchin seems to bring up impact gun.. dun got one

yeah get a nice big hammer and a chizzle and bang on the nut with the chizzle toward the left and it should come right off. You may need to buy another fly wheel nut afterwards though but works like a charm

Incidentally, I had to rotate a long block on an engine stand last night by grabbing the engine and turnng it. I don't have a bar that fits the rotary adapter, so turning it by the mount isn't an option. Unofficially, I'd guess the weight at damn heavy for one guy, and not terribly difficult at all for two

A rotary shortblock weighs 185-190 depending on year/model, as I ship them all the time. I'm not sure why this is so heavily debated, or why it must be asked every other week, but there ya go.

Easiest way to take the flywheel off I've found:

Throw the engine in the back of a station wagon. Drive around and find a heavy automotive machine shop or (preferably) a diesel truck shop. Ask them to remove the flywheel nut and front pulley bolt. Watch as the 1" drive impact wrench removes the nut & bolt easy as butter.

i lifted the motor out of the car by hand, with still some fluids and front cover on, so dont tell me it takes 2 people.

Based on my experiences, I wouldn't recommend carrying it down stairs yourself. I can easily move them around, but stairs can be a dangerous situation with 190 LBs hanging out in front of you.
