RX-7 start out questions...
hey guys, Im thinking about getting a 3g rx-7 and need some advice. My plan is to get one cheap with a blown motor, slap on a racing shortblock (ported w/ apex 3.5mm seals) and then go from there. Im very interested in this kit I saw, single turbo on rx7store.com with a t04s turbo, fmic, injectors, downpipe, power fc etc... so now for my questions:
1) where can I find a cheap rx-7(93+) that needs a motor?
I found one on autotrader for $7000 with a good motor.
2) I found the racing shortblock for $2500, is there anywhere to get a better price than that? even if its just with seals, unported.
3) what would be needed in addition to the t04s kit to make it work? cat-back + cat?
4) also thinking of the greddy t-88 kit. only has turbo though with manifold and d/pipe though. what else would be needed?
5) assuming I get the t04s kit, what kind of times could I run with the ported motor?
6) what do you guys think of the feasibility of this plan? If I can find the right car for cheap, I will have money left over from selling my gst. would it be possible to get the car w/out motor, racing shortblock and everything needed for a single turbo conversion for about $14,000?
thanks for the help guys. I love how the mazdas look and I hear alot of people blow their motors and give up/sell the car for cheap. thats what gave me this idea. please give me the pros/cons of it. thanks.

1. Keep looking on Autotrader or www.partstrader.com
2. try KD rotary, Mazdatrix, Pineappleracing,etc.. They could assemble an engine for you.
3. Jason's 500HP kit comes with a midpipe so all you would need would be a catback exhaust.
4. The Greddy Kit comes with everything. The T-88 has a midpipe and the T-78 does not come with one
5.With a tuned, ported, single turbo you could make 450+ horsepower. Some guys can get into the 11's with as little as 350 I think so a good driver could get mid to low 11's?
6. You would pay about 8000 for the single turbo parts and install costs. Motor about 3000-3500 so if you can find a car for less than 5000 you could do it. Good luck finding one for that much though. Even one w/o a motor could be sold for >6,000. Keep looking maybe you'll have some luck.
IMO if 14,000 was your budget buy a 2nd gen for 3,000 and put 11,000 in upgrades and you could have a 400+ HP car with very stong parts(engine, single turbo etc. which might meet your goals at the track.

thanks alot for the help, basically I want a car that looks good and has alot of potential. I cant afford insurance on a supra tt nor do I have money so Im thinking the next best thing next to my eclipse, the 3g rotary. the motor I'm looking at is $2500 and the 500hp kit would only need a cat-back, so that comes to about $9500 total...giving me only about $5000 for the car like you said. what parts are necessary to go single? is everything in the kit necessary or could I shop around and find all the same stuff cheaper somewhere? thanks.

It might be more trouble than it's worth to try and shop around for individual parts. The kit is a good deal in fact I will be purchasing it very soon myself. I was trying to shop around too but the parts with the best prices I could find actually came out to around 100 bucks more w/o the Greddy pullies so it is a great deal.
