Question How to kill the 75-90 mph 'drone'

I love the sound of my new exhaust at idle and when I get on it.. very loud, but sounds nice. But the freeway drone is going to kill me. I can harly hear the radio W/150 watt amp.

Whats the best way to kill the drone without killing the power? I read about 10 posts when I searched and it was all just added B.S "you cen never be too loud" or "you think thats loud, mine is SO loud" but no one seemed to post solutions .. just coments. I don't mind if I have to quite the whole system to kill the drone .. I just don't want to sacrafice my flames or any power? Idea's

Thx,
Robert

i don't think you can fix it. my friend has the full racing beat system... and it does have a resonance around 3000 rpm, maybe using the apexi N1 cans makes it worse.

i would suggest going faster or going slower

very light feetwork can get the drone to cut down but it wont be eliminated, basically you drive with the lowest amount of gas possible to keep your speed. Other than that you need to install silencers or get rid of your new exhaust. You turbo guys havn't heard loud, try 110db in the car at below 3k rpm.

Don't say that I spent over $1000 on this setup and it's only a week old. I love everything .. power and sound .. just not the highway drone.

How much are you willing to spend?

$5000 can get you a .50 overdrive tranny.

I'm not ragin on it. Sounds like it's a sweet set up. I just love my HKS bel-low and have no highway drone. Now my DSM has a dino-max set up and the drone in it drives me nuts. If i get in or off the gas it goes away. But any cruzin speed at 3000 or so rpm just sux.

look up the "stainlessworks" on yahoo....they're in Chargin Falls, OH right near me. Anywho, these guys are the best. I had the SRx7 full 3" and they had some sweet ideas to get my car a little quieter without hurting power. They took some of their custom muffler center sections that are quite a bit different than the standard perf tube that most exhaust systems use. They had these little cups, if you will, placed in a swirled pattern. I was like, isn't that restrictive and he said that on a 405hp small block chevy it dyno'd 1 less hp with these. Call them on their 1-800 # and talk to matt. Tell him you got an rx7, you talked with Chuck and you want something similar. You'll need to give him the inside diameter of your pipes.

It doesn't make it a hell of a lot quieter (gets better and better as the exhaust heats up), but it changed the pitch of the sound. Now I'm not embarassed to whomp on it. I can also hold conversations at the dreaded 3k cruise. He said if I wanted it even more quite, they would weld in a flex section. He said that having a solid mounted exhaust setup, like all of us do, causes extra noise. Please note, my car is a S4 T2 with a 3" downpipe that splits to 2 2.5" pipes and regular perf striaght through mufflers.

All in all, remember: It's a rotary engine. VERY VERY loud.

Dude, it's REALLY easy - get the Apexi super silencers and put 'em in. Takes out ALL the drone. You will lose some power, but I keep one around for long car trips and the like. Makes a HUGE difference.

They're like $50 or so. Just stuff 'em in the tip and you're ready to rock.

Right on! thanks for the info, I will call them up for sure. See what they can do for me.

I have considered getting the silencers, its not the money, trust me .....

But I did alot of searches on this topic and almost everyone said that they NUKE your power. So if I am crusing down the freeway and someone want to make a little run on a open strech of I5 I'm screwed. Thats why I made this car.. to run it ... when I want to. I can't flag the guy town ... "pull over. pull over I gotta take my silencers out first"

Also .. I heard they sound like **** at High RPM's they are made for long haul trips and thats it from what i understand ... But If nothing else works I will get them, but this car is not my daily driver, so I can always take my N/A to work.... but this car is just so much more fun. I just need to kill that drone on the long trips to Tahoe and such.

Any other idea's please post them ... I will let you know how it all goes, I will keep you updated, I will somehow come up with a solution. Maybe those ohio guys.

One thing that I do when i make long trips in my seven is to bring along a set of earplugs.. It aint a great fix, but they take some of the edge offa the sound... You can even get special ones from your doctor that only eliminate penetrating sounds, and leave the sounds that your ear can tolerate. With ear-plugs in you can still listen to the radio, you just have to turn it up a lot more... thats the only thing i can think of short of insulating your car to ****..
