How important is the ACV?

Mine has been removed, and I am wondering if that would make any difference what so ever in how the car doesn't crank easily when it is cold? Should I look into getting another, or would it make any difference? What exactly is the purpose of the ACV if someone could tell me just for clarity?

ACV is not related to starting the engine. It only feeds air to the EXHAUST .

If the car does not START easily when the engine is cold but starts ok when the engine is warmed up, then you might go to the ECU and see if the pin 2I reads approx a half volt when backprobed with a fully hot engine. IF it does not read approx a half volt dc, but reads something like 4.5vdc to 5vdc, then the water thermo sensor on the back of the water pump housing isn't sending a water temp signal to the ECU. and that could be your problem.

If the engine cranks over slowly when cold..........that's a starter/battery problem. Key word CRANK and it's meaning in this thread.

The engine turns over with plenty of speed so it isn't the starter or battery. It's once it actually starts it won't hold idle and dies after a few seconds. Once it does that 4 or 5 times it finally will stay started but I have to tap the throttle every few seconds to keep it running. I can't just hold a steady throttle to make it idle because it starts missing and backfiring until it dies. I can actually watch the boost gauge and everytime the throttle is tapped and the gauge shows it coming out of vacuum it backfires. Once the car is warm it will idle at 1500 rpms and crank everytime first try without these problems. Also, not sure if that affects it, in 4th and 5th gear under 2500 rpm if it tries to boost it starts shimmying and you can hear the turbo flutter and watch the boost gauge bounce also. Not sure if the two problems are tied together though?

Your car should NOT be idling at 1500 rpm.

This sounds like a timing and TPS issue.

I am definetely checking the TPS this weekend since it is supposed to warm up. Seems like everytime that I get a day to work on my car it snows about 10 to 12 inches, but it is supposed to be 50 degrees this weekend. I'm hoping it will be just warm enough not to snow and I am going to check it.

Looking through the Australian Training manual is so much more in depth on the mechanics than the USDM FSM. Had I known about these I would have been in better shape earlier on!
