How does porting IM work?

When I am porting my Intake manifold I get kinda confused as to how it is going to flow more air?? I mean, I can open up the ends of the Upper and lower manifolds slightly, but the center of the runners is still going to be the same diameter, so its still gonna bottleneck down to that point and restrict the air flow, wont it? Wouldnt it kinda be like an exhaust system, if you have a 3' exhaust but goes to a 2' midpipe then back to a 3' catback, the flow would still be restricted by the midpipe, right? Im just kinda confused as to how its gonna flow alot more, just by opening up the ends. Could someone explain how this works?

really the best you can do is to matchport the interfaces btwn the lim and uim, and the lim and intake ports. you're exactly right about the rest of the runner length being the bottleneck so there's not point in making the ends bigger. it's prolly not even worth it to port the im if it's not a high hp turbocharged application, you can't even feel the difference imo.

A restriction is a restriction. Removing restrictions makes power.

Example: Removing the cats (restriction), but keeping the stock cat-back (restrction) will add power.
Example: Removing the stock air box (restriction) but keeping the AFM (restrction) will add power.

Gasket matching your intake is about the best you can do at home. Yes, other restrictions will still exist in the intake, but removing some of the restriction will add power.

Yea I suppose that any restiction removed ia a +, but it just seems like there is a bottleneck before and after the ends of the runners, so there isnt really going to be any more air getting in. In the case of the airbox, that is a flow restriction that is the first thing that the air goes into, so there can be more air without it. As for the cats, they themselves are an actual flow restriction, not just smaller piping, so its understandable why you get gains from gutting them. I know that it does help flow, just having trouble understanding why....

The runners need to flow as smooth as possible. And where the manifolds meet there is a less than desireable connection. Porting allows the transition from the upper to lower manifold with less turbulance.

no no you want to have the BAD picture with the airpump cuz when you get all the swirls from not port matching it helps the airfuel mixture therefor getting a full burn effect of all the gas... you get what im saying rite..... screw porting man the airpump makes MAD POWER!!!

If I were to zoom out on my original graphic; you would see the small computer fan that was installed inside the air-filter. It moves upwards of 50cfm and made a huge difference in parking-lot power. But I'll save that mod for later. hehehe
