how do i know if my OMP is working???
hey everybody,
I bought an '89 GTU a few weeks ago and have a question about the OMP. I changed the oil the second day I owned it, and have since put about 2,000 miles on the car. Well I checked the oil level this morning, and it doesn't appear to have dropped any. I thought that rotaries went through about a quart every 3,000 miles, well mine isn't on track to doing that. Is there any way I can check to make sure my engine is getting oil? The engine hasn't ever come close to overheating, so I imagine its getting some oil.
Thanks for any help!

If its not functioning the ECU/check light should appear. Also it will shut your car down (limp home mode)and it will run like ****. The OMP if bad still runs @ 25% (I think).. According to Chris @ 7.com, the OMP doesn't have a ground protection or something and can short the ECU out as well. You'll know if its bad..On the TII's the blink code is 27 and one more I can't think of. I have a 90 Factory manual. I'll look when I get home at the N/A section and respond again....cool?

thanks for the reply...
any input as to why the engine oil doesn't seem to be going down? How much oil does a rotary burn between oil changes? The oil was nice and clear when I checked it.

Just run pre-mix/easy and yeah, I think I had that omp failure as well, the limp **** and I drove down the road the thing poured smoke out the back, though now there is no problem, no colant loss, smoke little on startup and no oil loss. Hell I don't even have that white **** in my oil filler neck. Oh running premix, no matter who tells you no, your answer should always be yes. Even so it is hilarious to pull up to a gas station, wip out the two stroke engine oil bottle and pour it in your gas tank as the guy next to you wets his pants as he watches you.

I have the same concern because my 7 never consumes any oil either. I have been running premix though just in case.
How would the ECU be able to detect a mechanical problem with the pump? Sure it is electric and is controlled by the ECU, but what if something inside of it is broken and it is not really pumping any oil?
I have seen in the FSM that you can remove the lines and measure the amount of oil being discharged into a measuring cup over a certain amount of time, but how the hell do you do that without the engine running? They show the lines removed at the oil injectors. The only way you can get them off is to have the whole intake removed.....which means the engine cannot be running.
Anbody got any ideas?
The other thing that bothers me about this OMP is that consumption of one quart of oil for about 2000 - 3000 miles does not seem like a substantial enough amount to make a difference anyway. Shoot....I pour about 8 oz of 2-cycle oil (or MMO) in for each tank of gas, which equals about 300+ miles! That would be 80oz of oil (almost 3 quarts) in 3000 miles.

The OMP on 89-91'a are ECU controlled and if there is a voltage problem thats when the "limp home mode" will kick in. You can use a pre-mix just to be safe, but as I said if the OMP isn't working you'll know.
Also, its normal for a little oil consumption...
I'm having reply problems, so if this shows up as a new message I apologies...

Wow! another MN RX-7 guy, cool!! I been doing this since about 94, however I lay pretty low (Forum speaking). I like to help who I can of course.
Thanks for the car compliments, wait until you see whats under the hood...<grin> its still a 13b.
OMP: you can't just run a premix and forget the OMP though because the ECU conrtols it on 89-91's and will through a code 27 and yoo will still "limp home"
If you need an OMP for a 89-91 I have 2 of them. I had OMP problems myself and thought that was the problem when really it was a bad wire and I had found onther used pump, thats when I realized it wasn't really the pump..Thats when I realized I should though the Mazda ECU in the garbage and bought a stand alone unit. The Mazda ECU stuff is great when it works.
Have a good day! Brad
