How do I get a WORKING Key???

Ok, when I got my RX, all I got w/ it was the valet key (The previous owner, a friend of my parents, never got one when he bought it). No big deal, I'll have another key made.

When I go to Mazda w/ the VIN #, 1st they cut it into the wrong key (the books code says to cut an FD key). When I finally got an FC key cut for my car... it doesn't fit ANY of the locks. So, appearantly the locks have been swapped...

So, how can I get a key made (other than getting a locksmith to do it) for my car? Are there any kind of identifying markings on the locks or something?? THX ~Colby

Get an entire lock set from a partscar, I sell them from time to time. I might be able to accomodate this if you need in a month or 2, the partscars I have now dont have keys, but one Ill be parting later on does.

I'd spend less money getting a locksmith to make me a key.

you can also do an old trick i used to do. take all the locks out that dont work, its easy. then get inside of the lock itself and check out the tumblers when you put in your key...if they stick out they are the wrong one.remove the bad ones if its only 1 or 2 for temporary use until you can get the problem fixed...i would think that while you have the locks out you could take it to the locksmith and they could give you the right ones, but i never went that far..i think i got lucky with my dealings cuz it only had 3 wrong tumblers..it was also for a 1 gen so maybe that makes a difference. iwould think if you could pick up any kind of lock you could get the right tumblers and mix and match until they all lay flat..but it is a guessing game until you get in and try them out. its been awhile and i forget but i think that any auto lock has the same size tumblers inside with different cuts in them..maybe take your locks with you to a junkyard and start picking out the right ones, from other cars...they probly wont have any idea what to charge you when you bring a few tumblers to the counter. i took out a leg side bolster withou damage from a seat last week and they charged me a dollar for it so it should be cheap.

for some reason i got the impression you had a gen 3 from one of your posts i read. anyways just a thought. good luck.

<~ Total RX-7's owned list; 1989 GTU.

That's all.

I'd prefer to get actually get a key made for the locks, seeing as the VIN key doesn't work in ANY of the locks, I'd imagine that they were all switched out... that or the dicks at Mazda typed a number in wrong on my VIN... *looking for recepit*

I had the same problem as you. The dealer made me a key from the vin# (35 bux!) and it didnt work on my door locks 35 bux down the drain and no refunds allowed on keys.

Locksmith qouted me at 35 bux to make my door locks work with the key. Take out the locks yourself and take them to a locksmith, it's cheaper if you take them out, OR buy a complete lock set on ebay or on the forum.

Are you ******* shitting me? You must have hungry locksmiths then...I usually sell a lockset with key(s) for $30-40. It takes about 30 minutes for the 3 body locks, and 45+ for the steering column...

Go to a locksmith, if your mazda dealership isnt helping, and get all the locks re keyed even the storage, it will cost you but in the long run i believe it would be worth it, just make sure you check all the locks before gettin in your car and drivin off just so he dont play you like a fool

get em from the same car??

Honestly, I have NEVER in 5 years of owning FC's bothered with locking the glovebox or storage bins. After all, if they get into your car, those wont be a problem to pry open anyway.

I took the trunk lock out once when I lost the only key I had, the locksmith charged me $25 to make 3 keys from it. The trunk contained all the info needed to make the key, the door locks do not.

just to inform you a bit more so there is no confusion, there is like 9 points or something they need to make the key from, the door only has 4 of them or something like that, forget the glove box or storage bins, the trunk has all the information they need, consult a local locksmith for clarification. Try to find a good commercial type locksmith, not a guy in a hardware store who cuts keys.
