How do I convert to electric windows?? Help!

Hi, I have a '90 GTU and want to convert to Electric windows. I have all the parts, and got a wire harness from an 87 (electric). I just checked it out and the 87 wire harness is different from my 90 harness. to make matters even worse it seems that the plugs on at the end of the wire harness (on my 90), have the same amount of wire leading in to the complicated main wire harness.
It is hard to explain but what I am trying to say is that the al the wires in my doors are accounted for, there are no "extra" wires. It is not pre-wired as I've been told. All the wires that lead form the door to the main harness are the same amount (maybe 2 extra wires), but it is certainly not the same as an Electric Window Harness.
Do I need to get into the "MAIN HARNESS," or ... what??
I am at a halt.
Has anyone here ever converted an'89,'90 or a'91 manual window, to an electric window? If so I really need some help here.
Thanks, Jimmy

Um, don't do it. Its only something else to go wrong. I have driven both, its such a PITA when you can't roll your windows down. Theres only 2 of them anyways.

I converted an 88 from manual to power, I just read the diagram in the Haynes manual and ran power wires and ground wires to an open fuse location. At the same time ran the wires from the switch to the passenger side (because thats how its wired up in the manual) so t hat all power goes th ru the driver side switch to the passenger side switch. its kind of a pain in the *** but with a little work and some time its a straight forward job.

So do you know if any manual window RX7's come pre-wired for an electric conversion, OR is it a total (body) wire harness coversion that is needed?

Rather than worry about converting the entire harness, try an aftermarket power windo kit and wire it into stock switches.
I can provide more info on kits and a wiring diagram if needed, PM me.

All you need is (FUSED) power to each door and a single wire from one door to the other.
You can run those 3 wires, and splice into your new power window door harnesses.

thanks guys, but I have a bit more... just trying to save my self some wiring.

So do any RX7's come "Pre-wired" (ready) for power windows?
What if I get a wire (door) harness from a "power" window RX7? Will this work, or will some more wiring still be required??

I did this a few months ago with my 86 (GX,) using the p/w motors and switches out of my previous 86 (GXL.)

It was a snap. All the mounting points are there and all the connections on the door's wiring harness are there. Took about 3 hours, going slowly (this time includes yanking out the old manual assemblies.) If the two harnesses you have are different, it may be that one has connections for power door locks or some other thing. The connections for p/w should all be there.

ttyl,

The pwr windows have to be from the same series car, S5, as yours.

AFAIK, all RX-7's come prewired for all options, pwr windows, pwr locks, etc. Mazda used one wire harness for S4 cars and one harness for S5 cars. All the mounting holes are there, so all you have to do is bolt in the regulators and plug in the wires.

As others have stated, getting a universal power window kit is an option. That way, you avoid the sucky Mazda switches that seem to quit.

Good luck

Like I said, i have all parts (motor, panel, switches), but does anyone know "for sure" if the '90 GTU comes prewired for electric panels. I'm goin to try doing this this weekend. (or let me know if you've tried this)
Thanks, jimmy

Dunno. But I find it hard to believe that Mazda would stop fully-wiring later models of the 7.

Then again, the '86 GXL's rear harness has connectors for the AAS, where the '86 GX and base do not (not on mine, they didn't.)

Yes, I realize how nearly useless this post is.
