I finally got my new motor in and running, but I am having problems. I ran the car for about 15 min and it wouldnt stop burning oil. I put oil in the intake to get some initial compression, but not THAT much. I checked the oil level and it was low, the car hasn't run but for about 35 min total since i filled it up. I have good reason to believe that the turbo is the cause of the oil. How can I decipher between the motor 0-rings and the turbo oil seal as the culprit for the smoke?

Pull the spark plugs to see if they are "wet" with oil...

FWIW< When I start a fresh rebuild, and dump in some oil to start, it takes a full hour of running at 1.5k in trhe driveway to burn it out of the engine/manifold/cats/exhaust.

IT is normal for a fresh rebuild to not want to idle, but you should be able to get it at 1000 or so. Use starter fluid to check for vacuum leaks.

About a year ago a fellow on this forum rebuilt his engine with a buddys help. It smoked heavily forever. He took it back apart and found they had put the oil seals in backwards i.e. oring facing the housing instead of the rotor. He rebuilt it since and it runs good. Lives in Nebraska somewhere.

YO, look at the plugs, but just reconfirm what hypntyz7
said, if the internals were slathered with vaseline and oil, it could take up to an hour to burn off the excess oil because at first it just gets thrown in the exaust unburnt and the exaust has to heat up enough to burn it off.

Should have subsided by now though, if its been running continuously for thirty minutes or so.

 

if the plugs are fouled with oil the oil is coming from inside the engine, if plugs are clean the oil is coming from outside the engine(turbo). very easy to check and diagnose.

That smokes exactly like my car is doing, I'm pretty sure it's the oil seals in the engine since I took the turbo off and saw it was flooded with oil inside and I turned it over a few times to see if I could pump it out and it just returns with the turbo off.

 

hmm, I really hope that is not the case. Like i said, the motor is brand new. I do not have time or money to fix it if its bad for another year

 

That's pretty much the same boat I am in, take the turbo & manifolds off and see where the oil is, if there's a puddle in only one rotor, then it's pretty obvious.

 

Well I guess that is the only thing I can do. pull it off and pray.

Yes, it looked EXACTLY like that, my wastegate was filled with oil, everything was I guess you have to take it off and look, mine was easy to tell due to the front rotor being filled with oil and the rear not having a drop, good luck.
