How To Access Fuel Injectors? Pull Engine?

Well, I was under the impression that to get to the injectors, you have to pull the engine out and get to them that way, but I've been told it's much easier to get to. Now I've got a TII with a TMIC, and I'm just curious the correct way of getting to the injectors so I can go ahead and clean/replace them. Will it require alot of work and mechanical know how, then take it to a mechanic? Or will it be pretty straight forward *nuts/bolts/wires go here!* and something I could do?

I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not going over my head before I embark on this mission. Would hate to get 1/2 way, then realize I can't do it and have to get it towed to someone.

You don't really have to pull the whole engine out to get to the injectors.
You would have to remove your TMIC, Throttle body and your UIM. You would be able to get the fuel injectors with relative easy :P If in doubt, check back to your FSM and/or haynes manual.

\Remember thou, with different years, the injectors are different. High impedance and Low impedance. You could check out www.FC3spro.com to see which ones you have

Yeah, I remember looking at I believe it was Mazdatrix, and saw the injectors I'm going to need for stock 1988 TII. But I'm still in debate of rebuilding my own engine as well. After watching all sorts of videos and write ups, it looks like a job for someone else, haha. So in that case, the more I can do to make it cheaper for them to rebuild, the better. Now, UIM = Intake Manifold? Not too familiar with UIM.

uim=upper intake manifold. just take the injectors out, replace the seals and have them cleaned somewhere like witchhunter or rc if thats what you are trying to do

Just pull the upper intake. The only annoying part about it on a stock TII is the 90 degree collant hose.

Haha, yeah, those coolant hoses really kick my butt everywhere in this car. Even down by the OMP, that hose gets in my way. Pah!

Well, good to know it seems like a straight job. Now replacing the seals, is there somewhere I could get those, like Mazdatrix, or will I have to get the sizes and buy them somewhere else? How about the size of the nuts/bolts/etc? I like to be really prepared when doing something new :P

Awesome. I really need to get my engine rebuilt, it's starting to flood after every run, and it's not really hard running! Hopefully it will last me another few months to get the money to ship it off to get rebuilt. Might as well have it done right the first time then not at all. If a place is going to rebuild the engine, I'll have them put it in too. How much extra *if they do it* would a street port cost, do you think?

While I already have a thread open, I was looking at turbos, and a stage 1 looked good, but I really want to go with a stage 2. I'm just curious about my fuel pump, it's a walbro 255. Is that OK, or will I need to up it some more?

a walbro is plenty, the porting will probably cost $200-$400

Ahh, that's not so bad. I've got to find someone who will rebuild this engine now, ahaha. Might need to save up around 3 grand to do my transmission while I'm at it. Do TII trannies have about the same lifespan as the engine? I know the TII engines usually go 70k - 100k miles before needing a rebuild. My car is up to 170k, so It's probably been through 1 rebuild, and needing it's second. My transmission seems to do fine, but I'm just curious if it's probably going to be needing that rebuild soon now that my engine is starting to go.

Yeah its a pain that the fuel injectors are so far in.

If you're going to ship it off to get rebuilt I know a guy here in Indiana that does a great job for about $2300.

Only problem with that is there would be another, what, $500 shipping? I'm definitely going to be going for quality, but I'll check around here a bit, I know a guy that helped his son swap his TII. He's rebuilt the engine before, hates these cars to death, but I'll see if he'll do it for me. If I can't find anybody, you're friend might get some business. We'll see :p
