hot air is normal, thats the air coming through the engine bay and funneling through the tranny tunnel.

the smell...no clue. check for dead rats?

That is probably corroded shift boots and oil coming from the shifter housing and dripping onto the hot cat and cooking. Then the fumes rise into the cabin.

Uhm... lets see. Hot air that smells.... Could it POSSIBLY be exhaust?

Your rubber shifter seals are dead... Pick up a new set at Mazdatrix.com ASAP. Exhaust is leaking into your cabin most likely.... I hear tell of that being bad for you.

There are 3 boots:

The large rubber one that bolts to the car - has a big hole in it...

The round rubber one that slides over it and fits snug to the shifter...

The one that has the metal plate with the 3 bolts in it that covers the top of the shifter housing and also fits snug to the shifter...

Call Mazdatrix and get them.

While you hve the shifter out, replace the shifter bushings - again Call Mazdatrix

Seems like I got all of the above for a hundred dollars or maybe a little more when I did mine.
