anyone driving w/ a welded diff?

Hi, trying to plan for a low budget drift vehicle...I was wondering has anyone tried this for the open diff for the s5 and how does it feel...How about negative caster settings? I am figuring with this setup and a set of coilovers, maybe a bucket seat, stage2 clutch and some race brake pads, it might turn out to be a pretty fun track car for less than $3 -4k. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Are you talking about eliminating the front diff. mount and welding the diff. straight to the sub-frame? Because If so, this is what I did and it's still holding up for about 9 months...

No, he is talking about welding the gears together, so that both turn at the same speed, and you dont get the LSD effect... a half assed LSD effect...

or you could probably find a spool for relatively cheap if they are available, it is also much safer.. nothing like cruising down the freeway and a possible poor weld job fails causing the carrier to jam and lock up causing you to lose all control while cruising at 70MPH(and no, there isn't a damn thing you can do to gain traction back in the rear, all you can do is try to correct and pray you don't hit something). seen it happen a few times with broken pinion gears on large Dodge vans.

i've run welded diffs in my trucks before...you gotta be damn sure you prep the spider surfaces really well and really cook those welds in there. if you plan on driving it daily or semi daily at all i wouldnt recomend it...it doesnt allow your wheels to turn at different speeds EVER so it really kills your cornering ability.

If you're really on a tight budget, do it. Or you could swap in an S4 clutch type diff from a parts car...if you could find one...
