Hi press oil explosion or mechanic ripoff?

I have a 91 N/A, 115k miles, in reasonably good condition. The mechanic I took it to soon after buying told me there's a high pressure oil line that's showing some oil on the outside. As with all rotaries, the car will efficiently spew all of it's oil in seconds if a line like this blows. He tells me it could blow tomorrow or in 6 months...and since it runs along difficult to access places, it's $600 to replace. That sounds high, no? Is this a common problem (the oil line, not the mechanic)? Or was I stupid to tell him "not now".

Thanks in advance, m91.

If you're feeling generous with a response, can you tell me where to find a new taillight assembly for an 8-91?

aftermarket SS oil lines are about $120 and can be done yourself. Personaly, my 90N/A has been through absolute hell, and the stock lines are fine. If he's sepdning 10 hours at $60/hr, the mechanic is an absolute fucktard. I'd say 2-3 hours TOPS.

The new assembly can be purchased at mazdatrix.com. They have dealer prices though, good look being able to afford it. Better luck finding a used assembly for a 1/5th the price.

Can't say if yours are bad or not; but I can tell you that Mazda quoted ~$1,000.00 to replace my lines.

I went out and purchased a set myself. I have not put them on yet.

BTW, I don't know your mileage, or car condition, but my originals have lasted 200,000 miles so far (I'd better change them soon now.)

mechanics are rip-off artists, find a local RX7 club member that knows his **** and see if you can get some help from anywhere but shop.

$1000?

holy rip off Batman!

they take all of 20 minutes to replace and are simple to replace, cost is less than $150 for the SS ones from mazdatrix or other online stores or you could even have a local hose shop build you some for around the same or less.

as for the question, yes if they blow they can puke all of the oil out in a matter of seconds, i pumped 3/4 of my oil out in a matter of a block and i was lucky i was pulling my car into the service bay to take a look at it at the time, had i been on the freeway the motor would have been toast before i knew wtf was going on..

Get them from corksport for $130 and install them yourself...it's a 30-45 minute job, counting time to jack the car up.

<-- for the 2 posts up.

Holy shabeezy if thats a word, I hate macanics trying to rip people off. I just replaced my #1 hose for this reson took me 1hr. Thats b/c I removed the fan and rad b/c I could just see my wrench sliping off and going into my koyo rad's core.

Basic procedure do as above get the SS lines from cork sport if you dont minde the banjo bolts or RB or a local shop build them if you want screw in type. Now pull fan out and shroud and rad. Now the can be dificult one. The #2 hose is back there and can be dificult these are torqued good soemtimes and are on a 2bolt swival pattern. Some people may remove the AC and PS out of there way or the spark plugs and wires and fanagle there hand down and around there. If you can get the car high enugh or dont minde laying under it you can easly get to them from under the car. Ither way is pref of the person doing job and the senario of where car sits.

If your up to it a simple inspection you can do and look over the lines realy well and have the right wrenches and you can easaly do this yourself.
