HELP.. problems with starting a hot car
Hello, I am having problems with my 88 convertible . The car starts fine when it is cold (the car it self), and will continue to run fine until I shut it off. then if I wait like 5 minutes and try to start it again it won't start. it cranks but nothing happens. The few times if it does start if runs like crap. but in a few hours if will run fine again. Does anyone have any clue? The shops around me suck. thanx .

I think your engine is flooding. I am not much help cuz I don't remember how to fix the flooding problem. Something with removing a spark plug and cranking it over. Good luck.

If it was flooding then why would it matter if he waited a couple of hours? A rotary won't unflood itself like a piston engine. Once it's flooded, it's flooded. I would check compression as I've heard that is one of the telltale signs your engine is getting weak.

this is Chris NG's reply to a similar posting. pretty much sums it up:
Fuel pump switch mearly works around the hot start/flooding issue.. it does NOT cure it.. .
In my opinion, the ECU can be partially blamed for the hot start problem just as much as dirty injectors..
The ECU does not compensate for a worn motor.... the initial crank fuel rate the ecu is set up is fine for a fresh motor, but begins to be a problem as a motor wears.. clean your injectors as much as you like, there is still a chance that you will have a hard time starting your car because too much fuel is being delivered during cranking..
I had a flooding/hotstart problem.. had all the injectors cleaned professionally.. checked everything over in the car (wasted countless of hours).. and still I was forced to use the fuel cut switch ... Ever since installing my wolf 3d and setting up my own fueling maps, I have had 0 occurance of flooding...

well my car has this problem but only happens after i let it sit for about 30 min to 2 hours. So the enigne isnt fully cold or fully warmed up. Now if this is a tale tale sign of a dead engine. About how much longer do they last with this problems. I have a 171,6xx on my 87 gxl.
THANKS
THANKS
