noob questions, looking to get a rx7 soon.
OK, I am a total noob to rx7's but I am learning. I have used the search and archives and found some good info and just want to see if I am on the right track.
(I am actually NOT an noob to prerunner/race trucks or WRX's since I own one of both)
The reason I came to this forum is to do research before buying a 2nd gen RX7.
My overall goal is to have a car a least as fast as my WRX(bone stock wrx motor) but RWD (for some drifting fun), good handling, nice styling, reasonably smogable/street legal, and around $3000-$3500 total project cost. The RX7 seems to fit the bill nicely.
Also on my initial list was a 240sx with a SR20DET swap but that makes it impossible to smog (legally) and the complications of the swap itself are something to deal with also.
Here's what car I have been looking for:
89-92 RX7 TII bone stock with low miles
(not convertable for lower weight?) and a cost of around $2000. I do not care too much about interior or paint condition.
FIRST: do any normal maint, change hoses, brakes, plugs, wires, rebuild/replace stock turbo if needed, etc..... Also get used to driving it for a few weeks and get any bugs taken care of.
Then mods:
install turbo back 3" exhaust
better fuel pump
bigger injector
intake
fuel cut defender
boost controller/fuel management
run reasonable max boost, mabye 9psi?
Does all this sound ok? Any recommendations on what to get or to look for when I go to buy a used RX7? Thank you for your time! When I start the project I will take pictures and document the progress like I do with my prerunner Toyota.

well... since noone else is responding to this, then i guess i have a few words to say, the TII's are great cars and all but by no meens emitions friendly, they do have there bugs and some times they get pretty bad, if you are rotor dumb i would try to find out as much as possable about the fc's as i could before i bought one, the car needs carefull tuning and lots of time, money and care but i can say this, if your willing to give it all the things listed above it will be all you could ever ask for . as for the wrx, me and my brother went and test drove a new wrx and i can easly say it won't take much to be as fast, if not faster then that car....

3000-3500 bucks total project, you're looking at an S4 (86-88). The S5's (89-91) are difficult to find in general, turbo'd S5's finding a good deal on one is virtually impossible unless it's carrying terminal problems.
If you want to drift make sure you get the DTSS eliminators (they stop the passive toe control on the rear) You can find them at www.racingbeat.com for something like $40.
You're going to have to find some more money in the budget to achieve what you are looking for.
