Help !! Pinging !!

Hi guys.. I have a 1986 N/A rx7 with a streetport, and modifactions as listed in my sig. Im experiencing what i think is pinging.. i had my friend listen to it as well and it occurs in 2nd or 3rd gear between about 2500 to 3500 Rpm. Its not there all the time.. but if i am not really pushing the pedal down, i will notice it... especially on hills... I was wondering with my intake exhaust and port, should i be putting in higher octane gas to help combat this, or could this be due to something else?!?! When i am just coasting, or light on the throttle my air/fuel says im running lean! . I was under the impression that its supposed to cycle back and forth. Could it be a result of my ECU, not going into the cycle, as my car was originally an automatic car, and we converted it to manual... Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Advanced timing causes detonation, so get a timing light and it as per the FSM.
Check the O2 sensor is plugged in, the ECU can't go into closed-loop without it.

Yah..its funny because i replaced the O2 sensor like 2-3 weeks ago (right after i got the air/fuel guage) and it didnt change it.. So then i got another brand new O2 sensor still it doesnt go into the loop. Hmm maybe ill try the timing again.. my buddy has a light...

if it's not going into the loop. but you gauge is working. then the 02 is not connected to the ecu. or the ecu has a problem.

lift up your carpet at the ecu. and find out which is the 02 wire. and see if the voltage matches your gauge reading. or if it has anything at all. if it has a voltage. and it's ok. (probably around .7-.8 volt at idle with no airpump. then it could be the ecu.

hahaha.. no i dont have a cat.. its just headers to presilencer to mufflers.. the exhuast is less than a month old...

Ill get brian to check that out on the weekend scott thanks......I almost wonder...if it is my ecu.... Although we did a farely big port, maybe its just running really lean who knows.. but ill try what you said first anyways..

i know there is a different part number for the ecu for automatic, and manual cars, but im not exactly sure what is different ?!
