Help! (engine disassembly)
Help! (engine disassembly)
Hey people,
I finally got my 54mm (2 1/8") socket today. I lucked out...I stuck a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter in the socket, and the cashier only rang up the adapter and the 1/2" breaker bar....so I got them all for $31.00.
Anyways, I managed to get the nut off of the flywheel, and get the flywheel removed.
I took apart all the chain assembly on the front, and all the bolts I could possibly find have been removed.
What am I missing about getting this thing apart? Is it glued together? Any special tricks? Maybe a site with pictures to guide me through the disassembly process?
I tried a search and didn't find any.
Help!

I stupidly forgot I had a 1st gen Haynes manual, so I looked into that.
Now, according to their disassembly process, I have everything out that has to come out. It just says my next step is:
"Lift the rear housing off the rotor housing."
If I lift, the engine is coming with it.
I tried a little slight banging with a 2.5lb hammer......nothing.
What, short of explosives, do I need here?

Well, I don't not mean to sound arrogant but you should get a rebuild video from atkins first before taking anything else apart!
The haynes manual is simple not enough. You need to visualize besides read about descriptive automotive disassemblies!
One thing I highly recomend is that you label all the tension bolts. You want the same bolt, each one, going to the same location upon rebuild.
If you think your going to remember where everything goes, well this is the first step towards disaster.
You will need to keep track of the front and rear rotors by labling them. You will need to also make sure, though not imaparitive, that if you plan to reuse the apex seals, that these seals also go back to their original locations too.
**** man, this motor is not like any V8. It's like a spring loaded clock. And by the time you get down to the housings sometimes **** just springs out and you'll have corner seal springs hitting the garage floor.
I highly highly higly recomend getting at least some zip locks bags so you can keep track of everything. Going by memory is, well, like pissing into the wind.
BUt than again I have no idea what you're objective is here. To rebuild?
I'm more than willing to help since I've done this rebuild.
But I have no idea if you know more gerneral engine knowledge than me.
And yes the Motor, if you've taken the tension bolts out, sometimes needs a rubber hammer to tap it a apart because it is kinda glued in there.
Tap the front housing at the top. with a rubber hammer.

haha,
Damn stupid mound of greasy tar hiding a tension bolt on me....
That last bolt came out,and the housing just slipped off. I was about to go find the guy who wrote the Haynes manual and kick in his teeth, until I realized that maybe I could have missed one of those 4,202,292,198 bolts holding it all together.
THANK GOD that I'm not trying to rebuild this motor, since as stated before, 12 million little seals shot out as the parts were separated. It wouldn't be too bad though, since I was disassembling the motor in a huge rubbermaid storage container. So....everything is still in there.
Only damage done to the engine was a chipped piece off one of the housings....which I'm pretty sure means that housing is worthless....or will soon be a clock display.
I bet 98% of the people reading this, who have taken engines apart were thinking....
"What a F***in idiot. I guarantee he just missed a bolt."
I seen that ad for the video....I was about to fork over the $29.99 plus shipping....but I got it figured out.

Hey Cody for a good step by step disassembly you can down load a factory service manual from http://www.teamfc3s.org for free! That better than any manual from autozone! Plus its free!
