help-broken water pump housing stud

i just got the motor but the stud is broken and there isnt anything to grab. what should i do?

go to a hardware store and get an e-z out or broken screw remover kit. thats what you need to remove it.

I would say, dont *** it up yourself, take it to a machine shop, if you **** it up, thats a new engine.

if you are feeling daring, you could just drill it out, start with a tiny bit and slowly work your way up until eventually the thing will crumble/just come out. careful though, you need to drill really straight, you dont wanna mess up the threads

Drill it out, that bolt is a bit small for an easy out.

If you do happen to drill to far and **** up the thread you could still recover with a double ended stud (with 2 different sized threads) or a new stock stud with a helicoil.

Drilling through a broken easy out just sucks.

It's not a new engine, but even I would consider taking it to a machine. The cost of the bits, the aggrevation etc etc etc.... I had a broken exhaust stud a LONG time ago, before I was confident doing things like that. Machine shop I went & I was glad.

The problem with that is you have to be DEAD NUTS CENTER to avoid fubaring the threads

Yes, drilling through a broken easy-out sucks. Drilling through a busted tap is also hell on earth

I'd try a small easy out with LOTS of heat. Propane heat ain't gonna cut it either.

then i must be a bad ***... just kidding. i had to drill out a stud on the bac...worked well but it took forever.

What you need is a drill out set. I have used those many times with a 100% success rate. The last time I used it was for this very job. The trick is to go slowly so the tool can grip.

It's sold at Sears, they have a three pice set for about $30.00.

thanx for the help guys, i picked up 2 extractors at ace hardware. i was gonna use a drill 5/32" and use one of the bolt extractors. did that can work?

i just moved to florida and i dont know where any machine shops are, this motor is freshly rebuilt with 0 miles so i would have to take the whole block to the machine shop.

what you realy want is a left hand drill bit and a broken screw remover and they tend to work well. just be careful, cause breaking the e-z out sucks cause its hardened tool steel and a bitch to drill out.
