heat from shifter normal?

I have a 90 vert, and I noticed that there is quite a bit of heat coming from the stick shift area while I'm driving. Not enough to cook a steak, but enough to warm my hands in the morning. Is this normal?

yeah usually it means some of your heatshielding has been removed, but it could as be signs of a worn clutch

im thinking its because of bad timing or a clogged cat. they will make the whole tunnel and evrything warm up real quick.

Stock heat shields on and no cats, your shifter will get warm.
There is friction between the moving parts of your tranny. This is why you have tranny lube. This friction creates heat. The shifter is made of metal. Metal conducts heat. Thus, your tranny gets warm, and so does your shifter.

Well, I'm getting my cats removed right now, so maybe that'll help a little. It's not like it's a big deal to me or anything, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a big problem waiting to happen. Thanks guys.

Absence of my heat shield (due to installing a Bonez cat) caused my shifter rubber donuts to cook away causing high heat around the shift boot. I read 116F. I replaced the shifter donuts and its alot lot cooler now. Checkout Mazdatrix. Simple fix and its been a year now so they're holding up pretty good. Still alot cooler.

Hehe since my logicon is broken that's my only source of heat so I don't care.

Both if my FC's had some good heat soak through there.

You might want to check the rubber boots over the shifter....If they are cracked or broken, it will let in additional heat

NORMAL?!?!

ARE YOU GUYS ON CRACK!??!??!?

I have NO heat shields, and mine stays ice cold, all the time. Want to know why? Its because I replaced ALL the rubber boots with new ones! No mystery there, just a quick click on the Mazdatrix site.

I have all brand new rubber boots, shifter bushing cover, and leather surround. My tranny is filled with Neo synthetic lube. After about an hour of driving, if you take off the leather boot, the actual shifter is warm. Heat conduction through the transmission from friction causes this. How would it not heat up? Its the same with your rims getting hot with long periods of hard braking.
