Head lights quit working

Head lights quit working
my head lights quit working the other day. what is odd about it is when i turn the switch to parking lights everything works then turn to head lights on and the gauge lights go off also.
switch back to park and the gauge lights back on. the light pods stay down. if i disconnect the battery then try again they will pop up but go right back down.
i tried a different switch but that did not change anything
anyone have any ideas on this?
