Gutting the main cat will produce a 5HP gain (or thereabouts). Putting on a header and a cat-back will result in substantially more power.

The dual exhaust is used for style.

ok well you don't want to gut the main cat at all if possible, especialy on the 86-88 cars that use back pressure from the main cat to open the 5th and 6th ports if you still want to gut it you will need to either go to rpm based 6 port opening or wire them open. wireing will be simpler but you will lose a good chunk of your low rpm torque, some people hate this some like it it's a matter of opinion. you can punch the pre cats for a simple gain, with minimal low end loss. the dual y setup was used for style imo. it's a good gain but would be better with a high flow aftermarket system.

ps next time please search i'm nice but others will not be as nice with this kind of noob question

If you have the stock cat-back, the 5th and 6th ports will still open.

Nope. The stock mufflers are restrictive enough to easily create the 2PSI needed before 4000RPM.

You should also head to the Canadian Forum and check out all the meets. You will probably find something local...Also, there is a BIG one coming up in Winnipeg in June. See link in my sig...
