gurus please help...

yea now its my turn to beg...

my daily driver rx7 is apparently out of commision, i cant figure it out.

ive blown my main fuse 2 times in 2 days.

everything was fine, i did a brake job, then noticed while i was doing it that the ALARM light on the console was on... didnt make sense, even when its enabled it flashes, this time its steady on.

i check all my fuses, they are fine. i pop the hood and check the fuses there, main is blown. so at work (i work at a carquest store) i pick up a 100a main fuse and put it in... i put the battery cables back on (pos then neg) and pop, the fuse goes.

now, even with the main fuse blown, the alarm light is on when the battery is hooked up.this doesnt make sense to me.

now to the reasons it might be blowing up...

whoever had the car before me (or before them, etc) apparently f'd up big time on a radio install, and the dash wiring harness (the one that goes to the radio / idiot lights) is melted in some places. no biggie, i just have the other end of it unhooked from the rest of the harness, i dont need no radio.

i checked the wiring under the dash immediately after the fuse blew the second time. both plugs (one yellow, one blue... the blue one going to the gauge cluster and the yellow for the radio/idiot lights) have melted wires.

wtf can i do? my daily driver is now dead. brand new streetported rebuild, just put big 4pot brakes / steel lines... lots of little mods. so im pissed.

options i can think of:
have my car towed two hours to my rotary shop and have them fix it? with this comes the question, just a new harness? or do i buy a shell?

a good thing about this option, i am planning on going for paint soon. if i take it to them now, they can pull everything in the bay and send it to paint? while its all out they can futz with a harness?

im seriously stumped. id love to get it going and just DRIVE it there seeing as how i dont have any AAA or anything and the tow alone will kill me...

i know i dont make much sense right now, im a little aggravated ... just wondering if anyone can give their 2cents, or shed a little technical insight into this. im completely stumped.

ill never not have rotors though

please help!

Take the big cable off of the alt, insulate it from ground, inspect the visible portion of the cable run for chaffing areas/ burn marks/etc, and reinstall a good fuse. Still blow?

If none of the fuses in the cabin fuse box are blowing, that narrows it down considerably...

Sounds like the battery is in backwards... can you confirm that the ground (-) terminal of the battery is next to the headlight, while the + side is next to the shock tower?

And that you have the ground wire (black/yellow) hooked up to the front of the battery near the headlight.

If your poping the 80A battery its probly what IceMark said. Do you have a test light? Check each term of the fuses and see if any are grounded that will tell you if you have a short. Easiest way is to put the clip of the test light on the + of your battery wile its unhooked and test the terminols. Incase you mean the main EGI comp fuse and not the BATT fuse waynes post in https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/wireing-short-1988-na-408769/ will give you alot of help

if you cant trouble shoot it yourself...
but you plan on having a paint job extensive enough for the shop to empty your engine bay...
i think you can afford the tow...

The wire that connects to my alternator shorted out against the lip of my intercooler when the insulation pulled back just far enough - that blew my main fuse. Re-routed the wire so it connected to the alternator from below instead of above, and wrapped the sucker in insulation tape and I can't imagine it will be causing me any more problems.

I have heard that there are very few ways to blow the main fuse, and it's almost certainly the wire off your alternator.
