Here's the 89 I just bought today! Anyone else still have the factory radio??

 

Mine didn't have the tape deck just the radio. I've never seen that tape deck before. Currently it's not in but on the list of things to return.

 

I did some reading & it looks like when new, the only 2 options were AM/FM radio & AC. Upon checking the owners manual/ looking at all the other S5 radios I've seen, any that have a cassette tape player have it built in with the radio, and it's all one unit. This one is modular, just like on the S4s. The tape could have been added at the dealership! Weird, just further proof of how much a flop the GTUs was in America haha.

 

mine came with just the AM/FM Radio. because race car lmao

 

Mine had the Mazda cassette deck in it. Still have it somewhere at home

I had one but it had 200k of daily driving in New England so the body was destroyed due to rocks salt and snow. But I kept the complete interior, bumpers, doors, wheels hood, rear hatch. Pissed that I threw away the seats. Not sure if they were any good but they look great in these photos

 

Woops...Should have added myself to this long ago... Frankly I cant stop driving the car... but I do feel a little empty on the inside putting miles on an original 9k car.... I would have won that game if I left it alone... 9k miles... Did I make a mistake?

So I've always heard that there were only 100 GTUs's produced in 1990, but that number seems a bit low based on the number still in service (13 out of 35 on the most recent GTUs list are 1990's).

Then there is the issue of stamped/non-stamped VIN's. ATB refers to his GTUs as the first one (800001) off the line in 1990. But there are a number of 1990's with lower numbers (e.g. L0709452). I'm assuming that all of these are probably restamped. The logical assumption is that the restamped VIN's were originally intended to be 1989 models, since they originally had a "K" instead of an "L" in the VIN.

Perhaps the 100 1990 GTUs's only refer to non-stamped VIN's?

L0709452 was mine. Titled as a 1990 (L) but with a 1989 serial number (07xxxxxx). Anything titled as a 1990 with a VIN before 800001 was a restamp.

Update for my GTUs she's still mine, and still n/a getting the rebuild kit together so she'll finally have a good motor again. large street port. Been down for 3 years.... Makes me sad thinkin that. But with the blown motor in her I still took her out racing. Lol smoking and all!

 

I got a white 89 still. Probably said that before in this thread. Bury me with her.

 

I love my GTUs more than my fd. There, I said it. Doesn't mean I don't love my fd, b/c I do...alot, lol

I feel the same way. I have a 95 FD as well, but I would sell that before I sold my GTUs. The GTUs was the first car I ever bought, so I've got quite the emotional attachment to it.

Yesterday I checked my door sticker and noticed that my VIN contains a "331" for naturally aspirated, yet the tire size on the next sticker is 205/55R16. The previous owner told me it was a GTU, but he apparently did not know what he had. This explains why the car has 4 piston front calipers and LSD. Too bad the guy swapped an S4 motor and it had an aftermarket sunroof installed ages ago. Looks like I should hang on to this car for a while now!
