Grinding: 2nd to 5th

So I was having fun and redlining in 2nd and I shifted to fifth because I was getting onto the interstate.

Upon shifting my transmission graced me with a grinding.

Is this an obvious don't do that, ******* duh type thing? Bad synchros?

Regardless, I'm not going to do it again. But I'm just curious if it's indicative of a larger problem.

I do it sometimes, Mine doesnt grind, but it isnt a good thing to do. Your best bet would be to at least, with the clutch in, go through the rest of the gears. If it still shifts fine then you should be ok.

It does. It's only 2nd to 5th. I'm assuming it's just due to the speed of the gears or something.

7000rpm --> 2500rpm probably isn't supposed to happen.

just double-declutch it. when you redline 2nd:

clutch in
pop it in neutral ,
clutch out
wait until the rpm's drop to maybe around 3000 or lower

clutch in
put it in 5th
clutch out.

Just to let you know, FD guys commonly break their 5th gear syncro doing that kind of hard shifting by accident

Yes, if you shove it into 5th gear from 2nd, and don't let the RPMS drop that will happen. Just let the RPMs drop before shifting gears.

Ok what about if it just grinds ALWAYS when shifting from 4th to 5th? That would be sychros right.. Or the fact that I drove 2k miles on no tranny fluid.....

I've miss-shifted into 5th plenty of times. What do I have to show for it? Grinds into 5th every time now

K, my thoughts are confirmed. I'm just a dumbass for being lazy and skipping 3/4th. Guess I should stop doing it in my dad's Miata.
