Question Going standalone, what to keep?

I'm going standalone and need to know what to keep from the stock harness.

I know the wiper motor plug needs to be kept, but is there anything else? Other than the ECU plugs I saw 2 "yellowish" plugs and one white plug that had to come off for the harness to pull through the firewall. One of the "yellowish" plugs was for the wiper motor, but what about the other one and the white one? What are they for? Needed anymore or no?

Thanks for any input.

coolant temp sensor wire also unless you plan to just use an aftermarket gauge.

Isn't the coolant temp sensor (for the gauge cluster I'm assuming you're talking about?) on the driver side of the engine bay in a completely different part of the harness? I'm just talking about the part of the harness that plugs into the ECU on passenger side.

Oh and I have an aftermarket gauge too anyways

ummm i was curious about this too, you also need to keep the plug that goes into your alternator, which should be on the same plug for the wiper motor, and i was kinda curious to what i could strip out of the harness on the drivers side, is there a guide for that?

depends, on S4 the coolant temp wire runs through the ECU harness, it may run through the emissions harness on the S5.. if that's the case then the only real thing to worry about is the wiper wiring.

in the wiper general area there was also a connector for speed control and sub zero cold start assist pump wiring, neither of those is needed.

My bad, you were right about the water temp sensor for the gauge.

So I stripped it back with the temp gauge wire and alternator wire, btw does anyone know what black with a white stripe is? Is that a ground? Because I accidently cut it at the connector that has the wiper motor plug.

Anything else? Wiper motor, alternator, and sensor for temp guage is all?

You will have to split open the former Harness to retrieve the Windsheild Wipers, Oil Pressure Guage wire, Coolant Temp wire and Alternator wires - fini!

i think that's it, i've only dealt with standalones in S4's so far so i can't be sure if there is something i would miss on an S5 until seeing one.

edit: S5 oil pressure sender wire is in the ECU harness as well? wierd..

Cool, thanks.

By the way, I must express my utter hatred for stripping back the stock harness, taking off the silicone tape wrap, or whatever it was, was not fun. It was completely sticky underneath and gross

Is it on both? I'm confused now, it's the little connector for the oil pressure sender under the pedastal, that's not in the ECU harness is it? I swear I have that connected still with the harness out, or am I confused again?

nope, that is in the emissions harness with the CAS and charging wires. not sure why you guys say the alt wires are in the ECU harness, i have never seen them in that harness.

The alt wires were in my ECU harness for my s4 :|

But they don't go to the ECU, it goes to one of the smaller yellowish connectors that plugs in against the fender wall under the dash.

ECU harness contains:

O2
MAF
MAP
BAC
coolant temp(keep)
air temp
injectors
knock sensor
ABV connector
cold start assist solenoid
wiper motor(keep)
sub zero pump(may or may not have)
cruise control
thermosensor
solenoid rack connectors

the emissions harness contains:

CAS
oil pressure sender
alt charge controls
alt charge main to fuse box
oil level sender
sub zero oil temp

edit: must be a year change thing, most every S4 i have worked on has had this ^ configuration.

I just freaked out and made my own harness.. I ran new wires directly to the connectors, for the few things that I needed. I can't begin to tell you how hand ythe electrical schematics part of the FSM is at this point Print it out, it's worth more than the ink it's printed with.

Well mine's a late model 88 s4, like very end of 88, so maybe that's why?

quite possibly, could be an early stage S5 harness.

Probably is, considering my body had already gotten a couple of the s5 changes, like my s4 tail lights had the notch in them that the s5 uses, so when I swapped I didn't have to cut my own heh.

The ALT the TEMP "IIRC OPS" Wipers are all apart of the emissions harness in return is the motor harness. None of these items go to the ECU they split from the harness and plug into the emissions plug on the side way up under there.

Karack - The CAS connectors can totally depend on the car and weather it is JDM or USDM. In every USDM car I have seen the CAS plugs are all apart of the body harness and nothing to do with the motor harness. In JDM cars they do have them were the CAS controls and wires are all apart of the motor harness. If you received a setup like this your CAS setup needs to match your ECU setup weather it looks into the body harness clip or the motor harness clip.

Cheers hope this helps.

SCREW THE STOCK WIRING!

Most people would like the wipers to work.
Also, the stock water temp gauge is nice.

The stock water temp sensor is just one wire.
It's a yellow or yellow with white stripe wire that goes into the crossover harness in the passerger side kick panel.

The wiper motors is connected by 4 wires (I think for yours - the Kouki ones are 5, but two of the wires are +12VDC).
Again those wires go to the crossover harness in the passenger side kick panel.

I just splice in new wire and route them appropriately.
Your water temp sensor can use a female bullet connector.
Finding a 6-pin (2 x 3) plug that fits into the wiper motor is nice, but you can just use an assortment of female (male?) spade connectors if you like.

Everything else can be yanked or just splice.
Since the CAS and ignition coil wires run through the opposite engine power harness on your car, you don't need to worry about that.
The S5 Kouki cars run the CAS wires through the main engine harness, so that would've had to been cut and removed.
