Gas Smell Not PD

When I have a 1/4 tank or less of gas and I hit a big bump (there is a big bump every 20' around here) I get a really bad gas smell. It used to scare the crap out of me and I would pull over instantly and check the PD with a fire extinguisher in hand. Ive hunted everywhere and I cant seem to find a leak anywhere. Anybody go any ideas?

check the seal of teh lid to your fuel pump, in the back hatch under the carpet. may be spilling a little bit. and my car used to have a leak in the rubber hose under the intake manifold, for the primaries. it was DUMPING fuel. check that too.

If you smell gas - you DO have a leak.

You can pressurize the fuel system with the key on & engine off, by jumpering the fuel pump test connector near the air box.

Then Your nose will point you to the leak, unless it's the tank cover as k-rok suggested.

Fuel check connector is yellow and is generally located somewhere in the PASS strut tower area.

Where would the connector be on an 88 vert? Im almost ready to be that it is the lid on the fuel pump. When I get the gas smell it is like it just floods the inside of the car. Also if I overfill the tank it reaks in the car for quite a while. Im gonna check this weekend when I have some time. Thanks for the suggestions

do you have an A/F gauge? do you run obnoxiously pig rich? gas my be comming out of your tail pipe, of a hole in your exhaust if you have a leaky exhaust. watch out for fireballs!
