Is this at idle? We all seem to run a bit rich at idle...

Hook up a meter to the O2 sensor's input at the ECU, and take her for a drive. If, at cruise in 5th gear, the meter is bouncing around .5 volts or so, you're good. Anything over .5 means you're rich, and you'll see this at idle and acceleration, if everything's working right...

Pretty typical of the 7....the fumes from the exhaust indicate richness. At idle especially.

In cars without emmissions it is normal but do you have them or not?

It's common, but should it be normally running like that probably not, mine smells rich at idle.
I'm guessing alot of us could use a good tune up.

the smell should be gone after warm up, with normal emissions on. mine does that, but after warm up, I still can breath with my nose right near the tail piple. NO gas smell at all.

no sweat if not coming from underhood. :-)

Read about how to adjust the idle mixture. This can help a rough idle and strong rich smell coming from the exhaust. The instructions are really easy to follow in the Shop Manual. Worth a shot.
