Fumes inside the cabin

So I have a 89 TII w/ a rebuilt JDM with a free flow exhaust and I always get these fumes inside the cabin. I know from a stop its normal but when im driving down the road I can still smell it.

I am missing the sunroof seal ( one is on the way though), have no AC components in the engine bay, oil filler neck is vented to atmosphere, and the charcoal canister is missing one line to it.

I believe the higher the RPMs get the stronger the smell gets. can someone help me out to whats goin on. id really appreciate it.

what type of fumes?

because cats smell funny sometimes if you still have them.

My car will get fumes in only when I have just one window open.

hatch seal is good, ill take a look at the tail seals in the day though. now that i think of it. the red part of the passenger tail light has separated from the orange portion and has a void...maybe thats causing it?

Glue them back together. But that isn't causing your fume problem.

Have you tried checking for exhaust leaks in your system? I once had my right muffler break off just behind my right wheel (where the y-pipe met the muffler) and it would pour in exhaust if the windows were down even the least bit.

Then the next thing to do is to check for any area's that is exposed to outside air. Has your car suffered any damage to the rear quarter panels? Ive also got an area from previous damage that is wide open to the outside near the fenderwells in the rear, possible place for a leak to get in, though have you also checked to see if you have all possible firewall holes plugged?

There is also that and the fresh air vent the heater uses to blow air with. Ive noted my cabin woul smell like fuel with the heater running (not using circulated air from the cabin itself) when my own hoses were leaking under the intake. Just a matter of checking everything, but it sounds like an exhaust leak either at the manifold or in a joint. When was teh last time youve had the exhaust apart or checked to see if the bolts were good and tight?

honestly im not sure, its a custom exhaust from the previous owner. when i looked under everything from the downpipe back looked welded together. ill take it to an exhaust shop and have them check it out. im just worried that theyll get rev happy on a motor im tryin to break in.

btw, thanks for everyone's input
