Found plug in cooling system good place for sensor?

I found a allen plug threaded into a hole on the front iron. Its where the ac compressor would be mounted if i had ac.
I checked a spare housing to see if it had flow around it and its defiantly in a cooling jacket.
so if anyone has experience with this spot i would like to know if its a good location for a temp sensor or fan switch.

You are not referring to the block drain?

Clokker has used a spot in that location (not the drain) that correlated exactly to the temps in the rest of the cooling system. Should work fine.

i know which location you are talking about and I have used it before on one of my previous cars.
it works
the autometer temp gauge i bought had a adapter for the sender that fit perfect into the front iron.

you can get a sender to fit, but good luck getting an accurate reading. I have my sender there currently and its not ideal. I don't see how Clokker could get valid readings either, think about it; when coolant hits that location its only been though the font iron/housing. Its well documented that the rear tends to run hotter, so how could a location that doesn't account for the heat imparted by the hear of the motor have a chance at being correct?

That said, its off pretty bad as the engine warms up, I've seen as high as 210* (per Rtek) when gauge still reads 160-170. However once its warmed up its a pretty consistent -20* when compared to my Rtek temp reading which uses the thermosensor on the back of the wp housing.

I ran two identical VDO gauges/senders...one in the stock location (near the oil pressure sender) and one on the lower front iron and they gave identical readings.

I've also sited a fan thermoswitch in that location with good results.

Interesting....how does that work logically? Perhaps the teflon tape is part of the problem?

The teflon tape on the threads of the sender to ward off any leaks...
