is a flywheel worth the money?

hey guys

i have a 86 GXL na, with a header, straight pipe to corksport catback, intake, SAFC2 tuned, new plug wires etc etc...

im wondering if when i do my clutch upgrade, is the extra money for a lightened flywheel worth it??

i want to be able to FEEL the difference, since it is gonna cost me like 500 bucks to do...

thanks,

Cam

Yep I think so too. You will reach top speed faster, but you will lose low end torque. The reason all car manufacturers don't include a real flywheel from the factory is becuase they are trying to maintain a good balance of drivability and performance. With a lighter flywheel you'll lose some low end drivability becuase of the weight loss, but you will accelerate faster. Just launch at a higher rpm I spose

I think the real question is, what flywheel to choose?
I've been looking at the RB sport flywheel I believe its called, something like 17lbs instead of the stock 24. The really light one is too expensive.

But it's awesome as hell. From a stop, flooring it you're at 7.5k before you even realize it. I love it!

I guess. But after going with an aluminum, I'll never use anything else. Once you get used to it (like a day or two) the driveability is awesome, it's fun, and it becomes smooth as silk.

For reference for the Turbo guys out there, the ACT 9 prolite (9 lb.) flywheel is cheaper than the RB steel (17 lb.) flywheel. I wish ACT had made this one for N/A's too

you know. maybe i just don't think it's worth it cause of the price and what a PITA it is to install it. don't get me wrong, it IS an awsome piece to have and i'm gonna wish i had it on my car once i get it running. but i think the only way it would be WORTH it is if i got one for $150-200 and the motor was already out of the car.

Yah, it's all preference.

I just cant stand the stock flywheel, I'd prefer a steel one over stock if I couldn't get an aluminum. Any reduction in the weight is worth it to me, but that's just me

I dont see how that is, I have a Exedy 9lb flywheel in my Impreza and it made no difference in the top speed of a gear, you're not changing gear ratios or redline or anything.. They do make driving alot smoother and flooring it in 1st and second gear is alot more fun
