Flywheel Questions

I'm getting ready for a rebuild, one of the many things coming off is the Flywheel. I've seen a few people here use FD Flywheels instead of the T2 Flywheel (19 pounds vs. 33 pounds) and haven't found any information when searched for it. Just figured i would through the question out there and see what people know what is needed to run the FD Flywheel.

Thanks

You can only use a FD flywheel if you have a S5 T2.

So even if i had S5 counterweights on a S4 i still would not be able to run the FD Flywheel?

You have to match the counterweights to the rotors. You cannot just bolt on s5/s6 counterweights to an s4 engine.

I am building an s4 keg with s5 rotors and counterweights. Does this mean I can use an FD flywheel? sorry for the thread hijack, I have just never heard of this option

198713bt, the counterweights must match your rotors. The weight of S5 and S6 rotors are the same so you can use the FD flywheel because it has the appropriate counterweight for your rotors. You will also need to use an appropriate front counterweight.

I believe it will bolt in, no other parts necessary.

An fd flywheel will absolutely bolt on to a s5 t2 no questions asked. I installed one into my s5 after obliterating the face of my stock one with a 6 puck unspung hub disk years ago. Here's a tip on removing the stock flywheel: once the nut is off, club the edges of the flywheel like a baby seal with a good mallet. It'll come right off.

Remember that not all flywheels include the counterweight in their weight, so ACT may seem super light until you add in the counterweight.

I just want something that is lighter than the stock flywheel and help throttle response.

Sorry for thread jack!!!
04 RX8 6port Rotors and Eshaft in S5 TII engine would use RX8 front and rear counterweights???

I have a group buy going on if you are interested in a flywheel for your car and can get the appropriate front and rear counterweights if you like as well. PM me if interested.

Correct, the counterweights must match the rotors. And that's gonna be one hell of a high compression TII!!!

I plan to have the rotors machined for a lower CR

dont want to go too light or boost will drop drastically during shifts.

I find that in autox, having a lighter flywheel to rev faster means crap when you have to build up the boost all over again.

So basically you are after lighter rotors? Why not just get some S4 TII rotors and have them lightened? Pair them up with S6 front and rear counterweights so you can use the bigger needle bearing. Either way you will have to have the whole assembly balanced.
