finding the VIN on an 1986
finding the VIN on an 1986
Is it normal for RX7's NOT to have a VIN plaque on the dash under the windshield? I found the one in the drivers door jam. Is there supposed to be a plaque on the dash too?
No that is not normal, it should be there. You should see the little rectangle cutout in the black tinting at bottom of window and the VIN plaque should be there. If not it was probably removed by previous owner or someone else.
ok, now I'm scared. Local mazda says NO there will not be a vin by the winshield. I also found 2 1990 convertibles with a plate on the defrost vent. I've also never seen a manufacture put it on a vent, so maby its normal. I just dont want to buy a stolen car. I went over the car this morn but I didnt see that box on the lower window tinted edge that u see on most cars. I really want this car.

the firewall is the easiest one tho, and you dont have to worry about a jspec motor or something throwing it off....

no its not on the demister vent, those are the small triangular vents on the corners of each dash. it is in the defroster vents at the very top of the dash by the windshield.

I have an '86 and there's a vin plate in the windshield on the defroster vent piece of the dash right up by the windshield on the driver's side. Also it's on the firewall and the door jamb.
I thought the number on the engine was an ID number for the engine itself that did not actually match the VIN. I think the engine number has far fewer characters/digits than the VIN. I'm gonna go look at mine later out of curiosity now that this has come up.
