Final Drive ratio effectivness.

I have a 4.1.. Im sure that 4.3 is quicker on a stock car but not if your making to much power. 4.1 becomes more effective with more mods right??? How much power for 4.1 too become better choice in the quarter over 4.3. Im planning on 200hp at the flyweel soon and needed to now if the 4.1 will suffice. No offense but dont tell me that thiers hardly a difference anyway and not worth the money. 10 miliseconds is like a simulated 15 hp gain im guessing ( dont try and get too tecknically with that one. Thats not the point)..????????

But there IS hardly any difference. It's only 5%, what do you expect?

You will HATE 4.1 gears if you are making good power with a n/a. Good power means high redline. I have smaller than stock rear tires, and 2nd gear @ 8500 rpm is 73 MPH!!!!! Im getting 4.778 or 4.875 gears before long. I made a Excel sheet that you would find interesting, it is for S5 n/a trannies. The S4 has a different 5th gear.

cool... I just checked it out.. I would think that a 4.8 is too high. U would have too shift to 4th in the quarter. I would think that 4.6 is the way to go because it looks like I would just top out in third when I finish the quarter. Does that sound right??? Can I just buy the 4.6 gears and put them in my Diff??? If not then I would have to go with the 4.3

BUT like u said... U scream past 8k and u think ur peak is a cut above that. So why go with even smaller gears??? U would have to rev even higher too get your powers worth right??? Thats why I asked this question. Thats also why Moostangs come with such low gears because they have lots of HP. I think.... ANyways one more thing... I have had aftermarket tires on my car but my spare tire is 2 inches smaller. I measured my tire and its 24 inches. The spare is smaller. Is something wrong in your tire size calculations or is it just me.

oh its VERY streetable except the high rpm's at driving speeds, but it doesnt bother me, 55mph in 5th is 2900rpm, 75 is 3900rpm, i havent taken any 1/4 times down yet, but i will be going to the track very soon, i dont expect to turn a really good time, i have my stock exhaust, but i have to shift at 5900-6300rpm cuz something is fucked up and it pulls like **** after 6k rpm, but i think i can run at least a 15.5 shifting at 6k, i can squeal 2nd for about 4 feet shifting at 5000rpm, so its pretty nice

4.8 is a low gear. It's just higher numerically. You'll confuse people saying 4.8 is high

I have 4:30 gears and like them quite a bit. It isn't a huge difference even from the 3:90, but it is definitely noticeable.

All of the gears except 4.1 and 4.3 are the short pinion style, meaning those gears need some fabrication to replace the long pinion style in the FC. The short pinion gears are from FB's, Miatas, and the Kia sportage(4.44).

Node has all the info on what gears are from what car specifically. Those gears will only fit in n/a diffs. TII diffs have a very limited gear selection, just 4.1 and 4.3.

Von, shorter gears(numerically higher) will allow you to get through the powerband quicker, and will make your car accelerate faster. Tall gearing and a very high power peak will hurt acceleration times, b/c it has to go through the low power part of the powerband before it gets to the top where all the power is. Shorter gears will get you through the low part quicker.

Have you ever been in a TII? The gearing is spaced so nice. My car with the 4.778's would have about the same shift points(based on speed) as a TII.

Ok...But what I want u too explain to me is that if your power is above 8k like 8.5 with 4.1 and u cant rev higher than that, Then in order to take the advantage with a even lower gear like 4.8 U will need to rev even higher or u will be wasting power....catch my drift. Thier must be a hp cross point were one starts becoming more effective... Dont dragsters use tall *** gears...

Guys... The higher the final gear the fastest it will take off BUT you will loose the ability to reach very high speeds at comfortable RPM's. 4.11 is one of the best street choices. 5 and up is for drag racing not for street. Imagine running the car in first gear all day long. You will blow the engine faster than any other... By the way you will not get a higher redline you will just reach it sooner (shorter gears). Do not do Gran Turismo settings on real cars they do not work!!!! 4.11 is a very good choice.

If you make good power, its silly to go to 4.3. If you drive a stock NA, you will see how long it takes to rev through the power band. 4.3 will help it rev faster. Try 205/50/15 tires, same effect. ON a fast revving car, you will just end up doing more shifts. Shifts kill time...

I need a rearend rebuild. I have a piece broken out of either the ring or pinion.

Since I have to have a rebuild, I'm gonna go from the 4.1 to the 4.3 gear.

That will give me better acceleration but, will decrease my top speed.

I've done 176 mph over a mile with the 4.1. I didn't have it to full throttle over the entire mile.

I don't need a 180 mph top speed. I'd prefer to have better acceleration up to about 165.

You wont be losing power. You will be going through the rpm band quicker. This is good for engines with a wide or high powerband. Gear ratios will affect your speed in each gear. With my 4.1 gears, top of 2nd gear is at 73 mph. Top of 5th(if I could ever get enough power to hit it) would be 203 mph(i think, its on the chart). That is WAY too tall of gearing for me. I want my top speed in 5th to be closer to 175, hence I want 4.778 gears.

Ok cool cool BUT.... Angel Guard ansewerd my ? I think... He says it does not raise your red line to take the full advantage... Just faster exceleration.. And two other people dont understand my post...im not talking about top speed or shifting more often..... Im talking about the quarter mile... Listen. I shift to third in the 1/4 and will reach the end at around 7k rpm Im guessing. Sooooooo a shorter gear like 4.3 lets asume I will end the 1/4 at 8k rpms wich im still only making 2 shifts but taking advantage of that extra 1000rpm right???????????????? If I go lower than that I will have to shift to FOURTH wich then is not good RIGHT???????? Hell I dont know im still confused... Am I right or not... I have a feeling someones going to confuse me..

Gear ratios are always a compromise. The engine moves through the rpm band quicker, which results in slightly better acceleration from the greater mechanical advantage of shorter gears. But on the downside, you have to shift more often. You need to find a good compromise between those, taking into account how the car is driven, and how often it is raced, and how it is raced. You have to decide what gear ratio suits your needs best. Ive decided that a 4.778 or 4.875 siuts my needs better than any of the other gear ratios. Another thing, tire diameter plays a very big role in speed in gear. Just look at my chart, 1/2" in diameter makes a difference of a few mph in the higher gears. Shorter gears are needed to run a bigger tire and keep the speed in each gear the same.

The higher the final gear the shorter it makes the shifts (more shifting involved). For example, our car is designed for drag racing only and we go trhu all 5 gears in the 1/4 mile. Our mechanic has a 1985 gsl-se turbo/Holley 13B, a/c, 2 15 inchbazookas power windows all that nice stuff and he is running constant in the 10:9's with a 4.11 with all that weight. He uses this car everyday for work. You can go a little higher but remember you have a street car not a drag car. If you wanna rise the ratio go ahead but do not over do it please, it will not be worth it.

If you go lower on your final gear you will not even get to 6,500 rpm at the end of the 1/4 mile track in 3rd gear. If you want to get there at higher revs. you need to higher on the rear end. You can still get there on 3rd gear at higher revs. if you go up A LITTLE. If you install a 5.** final gear you will be going thru all 5 gears at the 1/4 mile...
