the fighting flywheel

Hey all

My 13b has been fighting me the whole time i have been trying to rebuild it, i have finally got the giant nut off, but now the freakin flywheel wont come off. I've tried prying as per haynes, and i tried using a puller but the puller broke and now im just banging it with a hammer. and still NO moving. so is there a better way to get it off? or should i get a better puller?

try heating up the flywheel near the E-shaft but not on the e-shaft directly, after it is nice and toasty hot bang around the inner surface with a hammer and holding a prybay under the flywheel on the opposite side, you may need to reheat the flywheel inner area and do these steps several times because it will cool quickly.

i did that and it still didnt work. could there be a possibility of it being sized on there? or like can i buy a better puller? if so where?

On your flywheel there are a few holes, look in your bolts from taking the whole stuff apart(i don't remember) and you'll find some that fit the holes put 2 on oposite ends, this is towards the middle of the flywheel, and start putting the bolts in and thread them in, then it will hit the rear iron and start pushing and it will break free *note* i recomend getting other bolts that you won't use because you might have to rethread them but its easy just put it in that hole again. Heh, i'm stuck on getting my front eshaft bolt off, stupid thing i forgot to do it before i took everything else, i can't get the middle iron off, hah.

I used a rubber mallet.
With a few good strong impacts around the perimiter, the flywheel popped right off.

I say just keep hitting it around the perimiter. If it takes a bunch of hits, just do it.
also, rmember to keep the nut on there loosly, so the flywheel dosent come lose and take your head off.

ive been using a 5lb maul and ball peen hammer smackin the **** outta it. i have a long prybar that i try to pry it off with. and i just bought a torch hoping that would do it but not the case.

it annoys the hell outta me

aight, first get some high quality rust penetrant and spray it into the threads/tapered seat and let it sit for a few hours, next you can either use the bolts in the threads to try and force it off from behind (i don't suggest this method because you can damage your iron) or get another puller and place it on the flywheel and crank it down near as tight as you can get it without breaking ot stripping out the puller, now heat up around the tapered seat and the e-shaft but do not overheat the e-shaft. grab your hammer and strike the outer flats of the flywheel, you may have to do this whole routine a few times as the flywheel cools, each time crank down on the puller bolt, it should eventually come off...

got damn, i heated it up again did it ALL again and still no moving. but i did get an oil injector off . i guess i will just have to buy a quality made puller, can i just get any old run of the mill flat bar puller or do i have to get the special mazda one?

well, the best pullers i have seen were snap-on ones, they have sturdy flat bars that are twice as thick down as they are on the rails, the threads are also thicker due to the thickness of the rails. but that is only if you want to spend the price that snap-on requires...

they are more expensive but for the most part you get what you pay for...

sheesh i know that. but i can either fork over some money for snap on, or get some nice 3/8'' steel or 1/2'' and have my lovly machine shop make me a nice puller

If it wont come off, GET A BIGGER HAMMER! Seriously though, make sure you are hitting it around the out side edge next to the ring gear. Just make sure you dont hit the clutch surface.

Flywheels are like brakes. There's no such thing as too big of a hammer.

Spray it with PB Blaster, and just start pounding on it. Rotate 90 degrees, repeat. It'll come free eventually.

UGH ive been doing that! its pissin me off. tommorow im just going to call mazda and see if i can get a flywheel puller
