External surge tank not filling up!

Hey guys.

the car has been sitting for 8 plus years we had it started the other day but would only run for about 30 seconds before the fuel reg would drop to 0 and the car would stall, could get it started again but same thing would happen...then the fuel pump would run dry, we changed the in line fuel filter and now it will not start at all!

car is running a bosch 044 external pump coming from a external surge tank wich does not fill up...have tested from the fuel line in the engine bay by priming the pump and nothing comes out but if I take the fuel line from the surge tank tbat feeds the fuel pump and put it in a jerry can the pump sends it all the way to the engine bay...we drained the fuel tank and the fuel was super dirty will have to go back tomorrow to have a look and top it up woth some fresh fuel.

the problem now seems like to be coming before the surge tank but there is no lift pump in the tank just the external bosch 044 and the only filter I can see is the one I changed inline after the fuel pump in the engine bay wich was super dirty also.

car ran fine before parking it up but 8 years is a long time.

any ideas would be appreciated.

8 years is enough for the fuel to varnish and turn into goop, any moving pumps likely are clogged and need to be completely replaced because it sounds like no prep was done before it was put away to prevent that.

If the tank was super dirty, likely need to drop the entire tank and clean out out first, or it will keep rusting and keep clogging

Fuel pump is brand new car has no intank pump just the external one...i just flushed the tank again and blew the feed and return lines to the tank and still nothing!

surge tank isn't filling up. Pumps turns on but runs dry.
there was no rust or goop in the tank just dirty fuel.

Sounds like the pump that fills the surge tank has failed.
I have had a low pressure fuel pump for a carbed car sound like it's working but no fuel came out.

How is the surge tank being filled if there's no pump before it?

I thought the surge tank was gravity fed I'm pulling where the internal pump is now to have a look...is there a filter on there also?
