Unhappy engine trouble

My car is stalling anytime I touch the gas. It was running perfectly the last time I drove it. Its been a few days and when I went to go today it started fine cold idled at 3k no problem dropped down to about 1400 so I started to go and it started surging on me everytime I touched the gas at all it would drop the rpms and almost die. As long as I didn't touch the gas it idled perfectly fine. If I lightly lightly touch the gas I can get the rpms up to about 2500-3000 before it dies. Please help!

update on the description of the problem...

I tried it again a few times and it seems that after I first start it I can rev the engine about 2x and it will sound good but then all the sudden when I go to rev it again it starts the stalling thing. Now it revs about 500 rpms shudders and slows about 400 to 500 rpms, then revs up another 500 and so on... Anyhelp at all please I really need to get it running!

I think the car is in limp mode? I've been searching through old posts and saw that you could reset the ecu by disconnecting the negative battery cable and holding the brake for 30 seconds. I did this and then when I tried the car it ran perfectly for about a minute before the problem started again. So I'm guessing that its putting itself back into limp mode? I've not once seen a check engine light come on... What would be causing it to do this? Sorry I have no idea of how to work on an rx7. by the way its an 86 gxl s4.

I'm new, but i had a rfreind who owned a 2nd gen that he had to keep his foot on the gas or it would die. it ended up he had no compression out of his rear rotor. you may have a compression problem aswell, just a possibility. I may have it checked, but like i said, im new so there is a high possibility i may be wrong

thanks for replys,

lets see... positive it isn't out of gas( just put in 12 gallons about 40 miles ago) and it will idle for as long as I want as long as I don't hit the gas.

the tps... I've been looking at that in old threads and the symptons seem different, like problems when you let off the throttle not when you hit it? an the car has been running perfectly right up until today. Also I can't really test or adjust the tps because from what I've been reading you need to check it through all the rpm band and I can't get above 2k.

I haven't checked the compression cause I don't have a tester but its the opposite of your friends car it is perfectly fine until I hit the gas.

any thoughts? could it still be the tps or no compression? I can probably get my hands on a compression tester tomorrow.

ok well first, do the compression, then!, put in a new fuel filter, check your fuel pump for proper operation, if problems persist, pull your injectors and have them cleaned, sounds like a fuel system problem to me. i need to know Year, Model, and Miles. good luck

EDIT: to add, get all of the stupid stuff out of the way if you havent already, like, wires, plugs, check all fluids, blah blah blah.

been doing a lot of forum searching trying to solve this problem and gotta say mobeoner, that joke has been done before... I'll give you 1 point for posting but 0 points for originality

thanks for your helpful reply tournaport. I'll get a compression tester today and let you know what it is as soon as I can. Fuel filter also sounds like a good idea. New plugs, air filter, and fluids were put in by the previous owner about 700 miles ago. Wires however do look a little old. Its an 86 gxl s4 with 109,000 showing on the odometer but I think it had a rebuilt motor put in somewhere inbetween.

Sounds like a good deal, how much did you pay, if you dont mind me asking?

anyways, i have found that previous owners say alot of things, even if this is somebody you know, it doesnt hurt to check. you never know, you may find a leak somewhere or maybe something the previous owner forgot. with RX7's of any series or model, preventitive maintenece is worth its weight in gold, always keep that in mind, with that said, good luck, get prepared to learn alot, and welcome to the seven world

Afraid I haven't been able to check the compression yet :/ However I did replace the fuel filter and now it runs and I can rev the engine but its smoking nonstop. I'm wondering if maybe the previous owner had it adjusted to run with a semi clogged filter and now that is clear its running way too rich? I tried adjusting the tps from lean to rich(it was way way over on the rich side) but it was still smoking up the entire neighborhood! Is there anything I should check or adjust that might be way off? The car didn't smoke at all before this whole thing happened, except just a bit on startup.
I know I really need to run a compression test but I'm quite sure that the compression is decent by the way it was running. I'll test it as soon as I can looking like tomorrow now considering how dark it is outside.

I got it for as a trade for the shell of a 69 mustang coupe. Which was worth probably about 900. I do know the guy and saw reciepts on things he fixed. It ran like a dream and strong before this whole fuel filter thing. Really hoping its some sort of adjustment(s) that need to be made.

p.s.
Can a severly plugged cat cause the car to smoke? Cause I'm pretty sure the cat is toast. It looks a million years old and leaks exhaust. Also the p.o. removed the air pump and nothing else which I've read will overheat and ruin a cat before long. I don't know how long its been running this way.

Clogged cat can cause your "restricted power" issue for sure. And when it clogs completely, you'll know it. Hearing any rattling or whatnot coming from underneath the car? Usually clogged cats will "rattle" kind of a whistling rattle like a loose hubcab might make. Just a suggestion since you mentioned it. If you're going to replace your exhaust, do the cats as well or get rid of them.

But I suggest the full tune up. You can search for it on here in the sticky section up top or in the FSM or Haynes. Good Luck!
