Talking Engine Swap ?'s

Hey rotary gods... I need some answers for an engine swap from a 13B to a 13BT in an 88SE. Im getting it from Nippon-Motors and I have researched my brain out for the past month whenever I had time to see what the minimum is I'll need along with it to get it going but I still have some questions for my model I need answered...

-Can I use the stock wiring harness with minor mods

-Will the engine bolt up to the stock trans

-Can I use the N/A ECU to run it

-Will I need an electric fan or will the 13BT's fit in the engine bay

-Do I Need the TII hood to fit the top mounted intercooler on the 13BT

I'm just looking to get it running asap because they only give you a month to make sure its in working order before you can't return it anymore. Im sure it will be but still...I'd like to be prepared

do a search...not to single you out but this question gets asked like every other day so people in here are sick of explaining it. Kabooski, and sledgehammer did good write ups on it.

Are you putting a S4 13bt, or an S5.

The ECU's are entirey different, so while you are replacing that, you might as well replace the harness.

It will bolt to the tranny as far as I know, but it won't handle the power of the BT for long

The fan will fit

You will need the hood, or a FMIC.

just be careful when wiring it up, it's probably brittle as hell. you may need to get the TII rearend also, so you get the lsd and a stronger drivetrain in general. i've got a link around somewhere, let me gets it out right quick.

ah, there it is. good luck with the swap, and ohyeah, you'll obviously need a boost gauge, recofigure your tach/go aftermarket. tons of things to consider.

Yes, you actually could.

-Will the engine bolt up to the stock trans
Yes, no problem with FITTING it. It won't hold the power for long with even mild mods though.

-Can I use the N/A ECU to run it
I would say no... but I've seen it done. I suggest getting either a TII ecu or a convertible ECU.

-Will I need an electric fan or will the 13BT's fit in the engine bay
Not only will the stock one fit, it will work better than an electric fan.

-Do I Need the TII hood to fit the top mounted intercooler on the 13BT
I've seen one squeezed in below a stock NA hood- I felt so sorry for the guy that I gave him a steel TII hood that I had. (don't get any ideas, I don't have any more steel hoods...) Now, you COULD get a Volvo intercooler, and move the radiator back enough to mount it between the radiator and core support... of course that means you have to run an electric fan. The stock TII intercooler will be easier (swapping a hood takes maybe 10 minutes) and probably cheaper (buying a hood vs. buying a old Volvo intercooler and piping to rig it up + an electric fan)

I'm just looking to get it running asap because they only give you a month to make sure its in working order before you can't return it anymore. Im sure it will be but still...I'd like to be prepared
You REALLY need to upgrade the fuel pump with a TII unit, or even an FD unit. The NA pump won't do it for even a mild TII conversion. The NA ecu doesn't have maps for boost, so you will run lean and blow that new motor if you aren't careful with an NA ecu. Will it run? Yeah... but not well, and not safely. Get the TII ECU and boost sensor. There isn't MUCH difference in the wiring harnesses, you can probably get away with the NA one... I'm not sure though. I think somone on here posted that they used an NA harness on a TII without too much difficulty- some of the wire lengths don't really fit right of course. Your tranny won't live long under hard use, so expect to replace it soon and fairly frequently, unless you go to the TII unit. The NA differential is actually pretty stout, but you would have to either re-drill the TII driveshaft to fit the NA differential flange, or get a driveshaft made up with the TII front yoke and the rear yoke from an NA if you want to use the TII tranny and NA differential.

Hope this helps.

Brad
