engine questions

I just bought a vert parts car that has a S4 TII engine and tranny in it. The guy was planning on doing a swap but didn't have a harness or ECU for the engine. He put the motor in but did nothing else. If I were to put it in my S5 GXL what all would I need to make it run with the assumption the motor is in running condition? It is from a junkyard so it probably doesn't run especially after sitting for so long. Just trying to check my options haha.

Compression test the engine first.

You won't want to try sticking the S4 engine in an S5 car. It's not plug and play at all. Buying all S5 TII manifolds, TB, electronics & front cover, then bolting them onto the S4 TII short block will be the easiest route.

Don't waste your time buying a TII engine management harness either, your S5 NA harness easily converts to work with S5 TII electronics.

Do a search for "turbo swap" for all the details you will need.

FSM, fuel and emissions sections for S5 NA & turbo will show you the differences. Look at the control unit section, and specifically the ECU pins. NA has the 6PI & VDI solenoids, and the wires from those can be used to operate the knock sensor and turbo duty solenoid on the turbo engine. Simple stuff.

No, the NA TBs are not interchangeable w/ turbo TBs. Same goes for front covers. NA front covers don't have an oil return location for the turbo. You would have to make your own. You need turbo parts.
