engine questions

Ok so at this point i feel that there is no dumb questions. Im not trying to dump money into a lost cause at this time. So i have this engine i got with a 86 rx7 na i bought and it is also a na. I sold the car kept the engine. The guy said he got it from a junkyard and they said it works. its been sitting for awhile and theres not oil in her. Now my question is that i can turn the engine about a quarter of the way either way and then it gets tight and stops. Is that telling me that the engine is bad and i should abandon it or is there something i should be checking? Thanks

You can't tell anything by staring at the outside of the motor...tear it apart and see what's what.
Basically, you have nothing to lose except some time and all of your questions will be answered.

i understand that but if the engine only turns a quarter of the way either way wouldnt that mean a. somethings stuck on the crank or rotor or b. the engines fucked? i have a engine with 277K on it and after i did all the blocking of stuff and the ecu upgrade and such she kept flooding im wondering if i should just tear her down some and just reuse that one. i wanted to street port and such on that engine and use this one to just lightly mod up until the other ones ready? Thoughts? thanks

+1, if you have time and the interest and may get another 86-88 RX-7 (the simplest swap) if the engine's good. You'll still learn a lot even if the engine turns out bad.

If not, just sell it in your local section as an engine in unknown condition, and you'll get rid of it fast, in the 100-200 range.

Good luck either way.

I didn't see you specify, but you have all the belts and accessories off right? The engine should still spin over by hand, but one of the accessories could be jammed up. If its just the engine itself and its sticking to the point where you cant turn it over farther, its prolly best to scrap it or open it up for a rebuild.

ok so i got the engine to turn 3/4 of the way and im starting to tear her down now. That big as nut that holds on the flywheel what size is that? Any recomendations on a rebuild kit thats not to expensive? 3mm seals on a engine thats not gonna be that modded with 3rd gen corners or should i just stick with the oe stuff for this engine? Thanks

Big *** Nut= 54mm or 2 1/8".

3mm seals will require machining the rotors, so you're adding extra expense.

I'm not an engine builder, so, no.

I do know that the guys I would take my motor to should it need rebuilding prefer OEM Mazda parts unless there is a compelling reason not to use them.
Given that my NA just passed 190K without a rebuild, I tend to agree with them.
