e-shaft pulley removal questions

I'm trying to remove the e-shaft pulleys to replace the water pump housing in an 87 NA. Everything else (including the OMP) is off so only the e-shaft pulleys are preventing me from pulling the housing.

First, I can't find or feel timing marks to line up with the pin. They are just gone. How important is this step?

Second, do I have to remove the main 19mm bolt or the just the smaller bolts?

Am I doing this the hard way? Thanks.

um, if you cant find the timing mark just make sure you stick the pulley back on how it came off. as long as you dont rotate the eshaft you will be ok. you do not have to take off the 19mm bolt, that holds on the main hub, you jsut need to remove the 4 smaller bolts that hold the pulley on

interesting you can't find the marks. on mine, they weren't colored, but i *was* able to see the indentions on the pulley

make sure you have the gasket, etc for the pump housing i've become the expert of taking mine off and putting it back on cause of forgetting a gasket and stuff :/

To remove the pully, you just remove the 10MM bolts holding it on. DO NOT remove the big 19MM bolt. Unless you have impact tools, you won't be able to anyway.

As for the timing marks, often they just disappear from age. Look for two small indentations in the pully and remark them with model paint.

Which pulley should the marks be on? I have two small dents in the pulley closest to the enginge (but they seem more like rust spots).

I found the marks (after I pulled the pulleys). They were kind of like little rust spots, which I repainted. The pulley had some play. Assuming I moved them, do I need to do anything other than retime the car?

You don't have to retime the car at all. All you did was remove a pulley. When you put your pulley back on, you will have 4 directions to aim it. 1 correct, and 3 incorrect. If you don't know which way the timing marks were facing, then you will have a 1 in 4 shot of getting it right, but unless you are resetting your timing any time soon, then don't worry about it. You can always do trial an error. Put pulley on, run engine, check marks with timing light. If incorrect, take pulley off, rotate 90 degrees, put back on, check with timing light again. Repeat until you see the marks line up with the timing light. Just to re-emphasize, you do NOT have any timing adjusting to do unless you removed the crank angle sensor.

Thanks, that's great news. I did put the pulleys back on as they came off.
