Downshift to 4th - Bang,Screeeeetch.
I was getting used to my 91na 127000mi – shifting from 5th to 3rd at 70mph without going through 4th. It worked fine, but as I slowed down to about 50, I downshifted to 4th, and BANG SCREEEEETCH, the wheels locked up. I popped it out of 4th >BOOM< and limped home in 5th. I had that sinking feeling – this is going to be expen$ive. I pulled the tranny in the driveway, took it apart, and found the lock nut on the main shaft had come loose, backed up & jammed 5th so tight I had to chisel the thrust collar off. It cost me $60 for the parts (2 lock nuts, thrust collar & retaining rings). I took a chance the bearings were OK. Then comes the magic – synthetic gear oil. It’s been together almost 2 years, and I nail 2nd at 6k and chirp the oversize rear tires almost daily.
Tip #1 SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL.
Tip #2 If you’re in a hurry, short shift 1st (at about 6k) & nail 2nd
Tip #3 If it’s getting noisy – fix it – now..

If you're a real cheapskate, Penzoil marine synthetic lowerunit gear lube is $8/Qt at Wal-Mart. You can really snap the shifts at 6k. If you shift at 8k, you have to allow almost 1 second for the syncros to match up on the 11 year old gears.

Sureshot,
My buddy is fixing his TII with a bad tranny. When he pulled it apart, the same thing had happend. The nut wasn't tight and welded itself to the syncro housing. It cost him a few bucks but I guess it could have been a lot worse. REDLINE ALL THE WAY!!! It's expensive but totally worth it.

I use Royal Purple 85w. Good ****. Several people in the forum have even drained their MT-90 for it. If you can't find/wait for Redline, get some Royal Purple. 8k shifts all day long w/o hassle....until I heat my clutch up too much that is!!!
ok hears something u might like to know when u put sythetic gear oil in ur trany u have to replace ur seals and ur gaskets. How ever soemtimes it willl not leak but becouse normal gear oil is thicker it kind of sinkes into the gaskets the sythetic gear oil is thiner and it will leak make sure to do that b4 u put in synthetic gear oil or u will leak
