dashboard removal

Anyone know if the steering wheel has to be removed in order to remove the dash on a TII?

The guage cluster I couldn't get out with the steering wheel still on. I would remove the wheel and save yourself the risk of breaking something while bending it to get it around the wheel..

Yes, you'll need a wheel puller from any auto parts store. It's very easy and should take about five minutes.

How have you gotten your wheel off w/o a puller?

You just keep the nut threaded on a few threads then pull like mad on the steering wheel. I made the mistake once of forgetting to leave the nut on I gave my self a fat lip in the process.

Yes. I've pulled two without a puller. Take the nut off and start working it back and forth. Pull one side(3 o'clock position) then the other side(9 o'clock position). Mine came off after a minute or two.

I've tried that before. Pulled and pulled until it felt like I tore both of my shoulders out of socket.... then I went to the store and got a puller

I removed the steering wheel in my '57 chevy once without the nut on there, the car had no interior in it, so I ended up on my back with a headache after my head hit the floor. I was squatted down inside of it pulling and I toppled backwards and landed on my head.... not a fun moment.....

You should be able to undo the two bolts holding the steering column up to the dash, and work around it (including getting the cluster out.

That said, it's probably easier to pull the steering wheel. but it can be done with it on.

I had to remove the lower two bolts as well to even get my sterring wheel to come down, the two bolts that are on the firewall with that bracket that's welded to the steering column wouldnt allow it to move.

Only removign the bolts at the dash will allow the wheel to move up or down.

I couldn't move mine at all after taking the two at the dash out, it was too stiff due to the lower bracket still being on, so I just took those off as well (total of 4 bolts) and it fell right down on the seat

That was totally unrelated! I wanted to get my steering wheel off so I could get to my gauge cluster easier, and lets just say I missed the steering wheel

You can take the instrument cluster out with the steering wheel on on cars with tilt steering. The ones without will be a bitch

i kept having problems with the plastic surround, it was a pain in the *** to get it out, so I was going to remove the wheel because I had wanted to do quite a few things at the same time, but I gave up on that idea.
