is there a safe way to discharge the A/C system on a S5 N/A? i wanna make sure first before i do anything. or atleast how do you guys do it? thanks!

 

Most people vent it to the atmosphere. I'd advise against it. We've got enough holes in the ozone layer as it is. Hope the CO2 from the RX-7 blocks the UV from the sun as it warms the Earth.

Take it to an A/C shop. They have a recovery machine that will suck all the refrigerant out and contain it. They may even pay you, as the R12 (If you have an original, intact A/C system that has not been retrofitted) is worth a lot of money.

 

Safe as in physically safe? You can just vent it and you won't get hurt.

well im in the middle of pulling our my motor. my A/C blows ice cold. i have already pulled off everything from the motor so i doesnt run anymore. all that remains is the A/C powersteering system. i assume i have R12 still. since its so hard to find R12 is there a way to discharge it and contain it ti reuse it?

Pele, how much do shops usually pay for R12? i had no idea they did that.

 

You can unbolt the compressor from the motor and secure it out of the way without compromising the system. You'll have to lift the motor a few inches to have enough room to slide it off the studs.

 

Really shouldn't vent it into the atmosphere, much worse than co2 puts holes in the ozone.

 

If you are fully charged with R12, you really should have it recovered by an A/C shop. If you use the same shop to recharge after your project, you should be able to work out a deal so that they charge you for the labor only. They can credit the R12 recovered toward the R12 charged back into the system. That way the law is followed, the 'ozone hole' effect is minimized and your expenses are reduced.

If you just discharge it, you are adding a couple of hundred $ to the cost of your project. This might be worth putting the car on a trailer and towing it to a shop.

i would recomend doing it this way. if your system is nolonger a "closed system", venting the r12 out and disconecting the compressor, ther may a few parts that will need to be replaced and from my experince its not cheep. i spent $1,000 on the a/c in my 88 z24, r12, and it only worked one year, cost me another $1,000 to fix it agein and only worked for a year. then i converted it still $1,000 and worked for a year and a half. i did take it to different place each time. anyway got sick of wastin money and riped it out.

 

We did a Tii swap into our 90 vert and all we did was disconnect the power steering pump and the a/c compressor and tied them up to the inner fender with jute.

There is no need to disconnect any of the plumbing for the a/c or the p/s to pull or replace an engine.

 

ok sounds good guys. thanks for the input. what im doing is taking out the motor on this FC and putting it into another one, which leaves this one with R12 in it still. i'll unbolt the powersteering and A/C system and set it aside. and no im not going to vent it out into the atmosphare. i <3 planet earth. <---- how corny was that. i guess i'll do the same with the other FC. the only thing is im not sure if the A/C on the FC that's getting the motor will blow cold air. oh well i guess i'll deal with it.

 

You should have spent the money on a hooker. At least that way you would have enjoyed the sex...
