Is it ok to use dex-cool antifreeze in my 1988 Turbo II with Fluidyne rad?

It says basically GM but its 5year antifreeze.

The myth continues.I now have 5 car-years with Dex-Cool in 2 TIIs and no problems.I think the trick is to read the instructions which come with the product--it requires Dex-Cool to be mixed with TAP WATER because of its chemistry.Regular antifreeze reqires distilled(or demineralised) water or you will get phosphate deposits unless the tap water is extremely soft.

Just switch to EVANS NPG+, and forget about water

 

If you go with prestone and water, go buy a bottle of Red Line "Water Wetter", and add it in with mixture. It seems to work well for me!

 

What about prestone extended life coolant?

Seriously, Dex-Cool is BAD for rotories. Only use standard green coolant.

 

Whatever the case, extended life coolants are a big no-no in my book.&nbsp I recommend flushing every year, if not every other year minimum.&nbsp I've torn down enough engines with enough deposits to have my own backyard beack sand with all the nasty deposits in the coolant passages it isn't funny.&nbsp This means ALL the extended life coolants are "no good" in a rotary.&nbsp At the very least, it's a waste of money - extended life coolants are typically more expensive than the "regular" stuff.

I respect Dave's experience at KDR.&nbsp I've had zero problems with running Prestone regular stuff.&nbsp I'll stick to what has worked for me also.

Dex-Cool isn't bad specifically for rotaries. Dex-Cool is bad for any engine/cooling system that was previously used for a long time with green coolant. The Dex-Cool leaves a coolant crust over the old coolant's crust (very technical terminology here).

I wouldn't see a problem with using Dex-Cool in a NEW engine with a NEW radiator, NEW water pump/housing, NEW sensors, NEW heater core... it's just ethylene glycol coolant but with a different additive base. I don't see the point to having extended coolant drain intervals... think about it, you're really supposed to change your hoses every 3 or 4 years anyway, what are you going to do, save the coolant and re-use it?
