Detonating.

I detonated two days ago, and it turned off. I got it back on again, and now everything is perfect. I let it warm up this morning, and test-redlined it without any problems.

Have any of you experienced this and lived to tell about it ? How long did your engine last after this happened ?

I detonated my motor over 50 times before it popped. But the thing about rotaries is, you can detonate them once, or 50 times, but sooner or later you are going to hit the one that nukes your apex seal.

If you detonated, its going to happen again. What are your mods and what boost pressure are you seeing?

No boost, NA. only mod is no cat. It wasn't even hot when it happened.

I was just coming to a stop when I heard a loud BOOM, and then my car turned off. No smoke or anything. Almost had a heart attack.

lol, probably just a backfire? when mine was NA, it would pop and burble loudly while decelerating.

Detonation only happens while under a heavy load, WOT. It is MUCH more common with forced induction too.

What you heard wasnt detonation. No throttle and no load= no detonation. You probobly got one heck of a good backfire, and maybe some flames I heard this fc with a greddy T-70 turbo on it with all the fixins backfire a block away and it rattled all the windows in the area. Sounded like a sonic boom

you know, the same thing happend to me. i dont know what it was. It was happening when racing though, but i dont think i was at redline when it happend. there was this huge BANG and i never found the source or really know what it was. I have run an open exhaust right under my car, and i dont think even the afterfires were that loud. and i heard this with my full stock exhaust on! well anyway, my car didnt seem to be affected at all. dont know what happend!

Of, thats another thing, lets get this stright. Backfires are when it predetionates and blows BACK through the intake. use to happen on carbed engines 'all' the time. Afterfires are when unburnt fuel gets ignited in the exhaust and goes bang! which is much more fun.

When you backfired did your car turn off ? Mine did, and it was pretty tough getting it started again.

Considering you were off the throttle (no power to the engine) and you probably also had the clutch disengaged (nothing keeping the engine turning except its own inertia)... a back-fire could produce enough back-pressure to stop the motor and make it stall.

huh I had this start happening to me after taking some twisties out in the country after owning the car for 2 weeks. first time I heard it and now it happens while city driving too. I assumed it was the O2 sensor going bad and having the ECU make the mixture too rich. was about to replace the O2 sensor but u guys are saying this is just normal...... so why did I not notice it till now?
