detonating question

1st off my car is a non turbo 86 gxl. The emissions have been removed and it has a full dual exhaust. Other than that as far as the engine goes it was rebuilt some time ago. It probably has 50,000 miles on it. I have messed with the TB lately fixing my high idle so I may have changed the air fuel mixture somehow. I feel like this is how I blew the last engine since Im now crossing the same paths as before I needed to ask. So my question comes from me reading some threads about the air fuel ratio and detonating. I want to make sure I don't blow this engine as Im about to start driving it harder now that im getting my driveshaft put in today. So is there anything I can do to prevent a detonation and what exactly does it mean to detonate. Also the car has its stock ecu, so as far as changing my air fuel mixture Im not sure I can do much. I know theres a little black box by the passenger side intake that has a screw you can turn to make it run richer I think. Is that all I can do to tune the car and do I need to get anything else to make my car as good as it can?

install an air fuel ratio gauge then there will no guessing and also make sure your timing is correct.

Black box..no.
A variable resistor yes,for idle only.
I may be wrong but I think it is unlikely that you are gonna Detonate.Get a turbo first.
You can't change the air fuel with a stock ecu unless you have an Safc on the car,or a aftermarket Ecu.
The stock ecu is controlling fuel.
....
I think the only thing that can detonate is your head from too much info Found..ya guessed it!,On the RX7 Club!..(j/k..ribbin ya!)

Thanks for the input its much appriciated. I did order an air fuel guage so hopefully that will put my mind at ease.

Unless the timing is way off (CAS stabbed wrong), there's not much reason to worry about detonation on an NA.

ditto, the engine will struggle to make enough power to cause severe detonation on a naturally aspirated rotary engine. timing is the only way you will actually get audible detonation cycles to occur. sounds like a rapid ballpeen hammer on a sheet of metal.

even in turbo rotaries lean conditions are SBD.
