counter weight removal

so i got the flex plate off today and been beating on the flywheel with a 2lb brass hammer for a good 5 mins but still wont budge. do i...

1. get a bigger hammer
2. beat on it some more
3. get a puller
4. do option 1 then 2

whats the "easiest" or fastest way to take this **** off? any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I R confused. You got the flex plate off (which has the counterweight attached to it with bolts), but you are beating on the flywheel with a hammer??????

The counterweight is bolted to the flex plate. Remove the bolts and it seperates from the flex plate.????

If you are trying to get the flywheel off the engine (which stock flywheels have the counterweight integrated into them), you have to beat it repeatedly with a hammer. You MUST vibrate it off, giving it a few whacks here and there will not do anything. I recommend you wear ear plugs and just go at it. You know you are doing it right when, without earplugs, your ears will start to ring : ) The heavier the hammer, the better. Keep the giant nut threaded at the end, since it will just pop out without notice.

And as i've told people before, HIT IT LIKE A MAN.

.
my mistake i meant beating on the counterweight.

so it has to be vibrated off you say? you think an air chisel with a flathead attachment would do the trick?

So you have the flex plate off the car and are trying to seperate the counterweight from it???

It has i think 4-5 bolts on it. Remove them and if it's still not coming off all I can say is try the hammer or air chisel to loosen it up. The counterweight shouldn't be attached too hard to the flex plate really, it's only held by those 4-5 bolts.

No, he took the flex plate off of the flywheel and left the counterweight on the eccentric.

I've had success with putting the flex plate back on.

Also, you can put a prybar on the counterweight and use a tension bolt as a pivot. Pry and bang the counterweight at the same time...

I am so confused. A flex plate is for an automatic car as a flywheel is for a manual car. You cannot have BOTH. You either have a flex plate or a flywheel.

I'll just hush now

yes you are right but the counterweight is behind the flexplate. the flexplate can be seperated from the counterweight.

it was partially my mistake, i needed to take the counterweight off not the flexplate.

Ahh, then if you removed the flexplate from the counterweight, and the counterweight is stuck on the e-shaft, I would suggest you put the flexplate back on the counterweight. That way you get more leverage when you pound on it. It will be just like removing an flywheel. I don't see it coming out with the flexplate removed unless you get a puller...

don't overthink this one people..

go to the hardware store or find a bolt that fits the pitch of the flex plate mount holes and run it through until it contacts the rear stat gear, keep tightening the bolt and tap around the counterweight edge lightly with a hammer. be sure the 36mm flywheel nut is loose first of course. i just use a small impact gun to tighten the outer bolt and it pops right off without any fuss.

Just wanted to say thank you because I tried dead blow hammers, hub puller, slide hammer, and even pry bar. Nothing worked until this. Can’t believe I didn’t think of this sooner.

14 years later, and this comment keeps being relevant! Joined the forum specially to say thank you to @RotaryEvolution / I also want to add that it worked on my automatic 12A FB S2. I used 4 bolts, 1/4 turn at a time on each bolt in a “X” pattern.

Here’s a short video of the success: http://imgur.com/gallery/Jpq8OF6

Haven’t commented in a long time, had a counterweight wedged on the eshaft like this. Beat on it with the flywheel on for two hours, nothing. This popped it off in 2 seconds. Appreciate the tip.
